Barnes has got to play Vescovi now.

Tobias averaged 15.3 points and 7.3 rebounds as a freshman and between him and Hopson, was generally the primary go-to option. That’s pretty dang good for a freshman.

What hurt his draft stock was questionable athleticism and average outside shooting numbers. That and being a member of the same draft class as Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard, Klay Thompson, Kemba Walker, and Tristan Thompson.

Of course, the teams that selected Chris Singleton, Jimmer Fredette, Jan Vesely, and Bismack Biyombo ahead of TH probably regret that decision. Milwaukee probably regrets giving up on him so early, as well, but again, their decision to move on was based on his slow development with regard to his athleticism and shot. He was a guy that probably could have used an additional in college to develop, but given his draft projection and his coach getting fired, I can understand why he jumped.

Tobias was a tweener forward before it became cool. Plus he changed his body and worked really hard on his outside shooting.

Yep, hence the questionable athleticism and outside shot being the reason for him falling in the draft and the time it took him to develop as an NBA player.

I could be wrong (this was 8 years ago) but I don’t remember so much the athleticism as with the shot. I do remember some people saying they thought his upside was limited, but I thought people believed he had good athleticism.

I know we are young but I'm having a hard time getting excited about a couple guys returning next year. Looks like career role players.

Sorry, wrong thread. It should be in the game thread.

I was reading about him and this guy is not like a normal freshman. He was playing in a league against top competition and was coached by an NBA guy. I know Barnes is tough on PG's but I think this guy can pick up the schemes better than a freshman and help us out a lot sooner that later. Hate to waste one yr of his eligibility but its necessary now with LT gone.
James is not a point guard at this point. If Wisconsin was a pressing team they would have exposed him more. I stated this weeks ago but fans will be looking to next season. This team still needs a rim protector.

I thought that was Stokes, another disappointment really.

ON SANTIAGO VESCOVI ARRIVING ON CAMPUS SATURDAY

“He came in while we were in our pregame meal. I don’t think there’s any question he wants to play. Good Lord is looking out for us. We have a week off here. We have a lot of things to work through. Not just physically but mentally. See how much he can do, how long it takes him. We don’t know. I do think he wants to play.”

It was probably covered in the game thread, but Vescovi was in the gray warmups with Uris, Bailey, AND Turner. He ran out with the team coming out if the locker room (but stood to the side during the layup lines.

Turner is still a game captain. He and Bowden met with the refs and UW players at half court a few minutes before Tip Off.

Vescovi was talking a lot to Bailey (and Uros) during warmups. So hopefully he won't be slowed as much as Pons was with English when he was a freshman.

Do we know if Santiago has been cleared to play by the NC double asshoes?

Does he have to wait for classes to start before he is allowed to play?

I had heard that and posted it a few times, but all indications now are that it isn't a current rule. Still needs NCAA clearance, but it sounds as if that won't be an issue and he could play next Saturday versus LSU. I'll be surprised if Barnes plays him that soon though.

Maybe fitness is a better word, as you mentioned him changing his body, which is really what I was aiming at. He seemed a bit pudgy and that affected his athleticism. Developing his body and fitness level helped him.

Throw him out there for 2 or 3 minutes. If things fall apart, pull him out. If not, let him play some more. At this point, we don't have much to lose. Now, if we are winning after the first 8-10 minutes of play, maybe we don't need him yet. I think it would be situational, if I were the coach.

There have been a few players over the years, who have immediately transformed the outlook for our team. These include Grunfeld, King, Houston (well, sort of), and a handful of others. I think there is enough mystery surrounding Vescovi to give us a glimmer of hope that he can be one of those types of players. Being a point guard adds to that hope, given that we just lost our senior leader, and that point guard is where the offense and defense usually begin. Winning MVP in an "NBA Academy" tourney doesn't hurt either.

I would be happy if he could simply blend in with the team, and be another warm body...but I have hopes for more. Until he actually gets in there, and we see the reality, we can at least dream about what could be.
