Barnes says he is really happy with his point guards.

Vescovi better get better defensively and at rebounding I think if he's going to start. I think Barnes will use him as an offensive spark off the bench and when teams play zone against us. I believe his numbers will shrink a bit across the board this year.
Vescovi has reportedly lost some weight and really worked on his lateral quickness and strength with the main purpose to be to improve his defense...he knew it was a weakness and an area that Barnes wanted improvement and he stated he’s worked on it, I expect him to play big minutes.

Anosike is not going to play much over Fulkerson and Pons and I doubt many reserve players have ever led their team in rebounding. He's a good rebounder but I doubt he's on the floor with the game on the line late in the 2nd half when we will need key rebounds. Pons was not a very good rebounder last season thus my reasoning that he and Fulkerson must improve in that department.
Agree with you 97% of the time but this is the 3. There WILL be games where Anosike will out effort one of those guys. Hopefully his, CRB and the other guys effort will help Pons and Fulk put more in when it comes to rebounding but if they don’t improve in that area, Anosike will steal their minutes. Imo

I know it's been said a few times, but man, we truly do have an embarrassment of riches in the backcourt.

Vescovi
James
Bailey
Springer
Johnson

Granted we haven't seen the last three play, but I don't think it's a stretch to say that all of these guys would be starters in 95%+ P5 programs...

Fulky seems to have a hard time establishing THEN keeping rebounding position down low. Just not sure that he averages more than 6-7 per game, but I do think Pons picks it up a bit, and I think our guards help out more than in the past. Of course, Anosike will be a beast when he's in there. When all is said and done, I think we're in the top 5 in the league rebounding.

I think this team will be able to play small ball with any team in the country. I wouldn't be shocked to see JJJ play 1-5 in this scenario. Vesco was a star last year and will be the team leader this year IMO. The challenge will come with a team that has solid guard play and a dominating big guy. Maybe Uros will give more/better minutes this year and help with that issue.

I don't think it's unreasonable to say he has a history of doing so at Tennessee.
I didn't say he hasn't developed players. Barnes has shown he can get them better. But plav looked unathletic last season. I'm not sure he can improve that aspect. But here's hoping I'm wrong.

Who, technically, are the “point guards”?
Vescovi honestly seems like the only real “true” PG...Springer has been practicing there some but is probably better suited primarily off the ball. Bailey has been practicing there as well but played the 2 at Oregon, might be backup PG. James is obviously a bit unorthodox as a PG, but has the vision and IQ to play the position.

who starts at point then?

A note: Santi-agria's defensive rating was fourth-highest on the team, behind Uros, Bowden and Yves.
JJJ/Keon/Springer/Fulkerson/Pons will be our starting 5 I think as it's our best defensive lineup and our most athletic offensive group.

If we are top5 in rebounding we'll win the league easily then I feel. I just don't see where the big numbers are going to come from.

Pons isn’t likely to increase his defensive rebounding unless he quits trying to block so many shots. I suspect CRB is fine with Pons blocking shots or he would have talked about it last year. Maybe he can pick up the offensive rebounding a bit but he will have to hang closer to the basket and not be on the perimeter looking for an open 3, but again I think this is CRB’s design

I agree defensively. He has to improve there. Beyond that, I think you are overemphasizing the rebounding aspect. It isn't Vescovi's job to crash the boards. He gets the opportune ones and that's it. He is typically around the perimeter, so the opportunities to make a significant jump in his rebounding numbers are few. He averaged 3.3 rpg, which is more than respectable from a PG.

I don't think Pons or Fulkerson are likely to be sitting with the game on the line either. I could see some lineups that have Fulky/Pons/Anosike on the floor together when we go big and need to matchup on the boards. Lots of great lineup options this year!

Too many folks underestimate Vescovi. For a 17 year old who showed up after Christmas, his contributions were amazing. I expect he will make huge strides both this season and next as he continues to mature

I'm a big fan of Vescovi, think he's a good player, I just feel that his role is going to change some this year. Barnes loves defense and I just don't think he's in the same league as JJJ/Springer/Keon on the defensive end and that's really the main reason I think the others get some of his minutes.

His contributions were amazing, but they were not amazing enough to really change things. Nobody is underestimating him, its more so that most are expecting the newcomers to be more talented. If they are as advertised then SV may lose some minutes.

That's fine if that is what you believe, but its really irrelevant to the idea of thinking our PG has to be a rebound magnet. That was the idea I believed you were overemphasizing. The minutes will work themselves out.

Personally, I think Vescovi and JJJ are both better players than we saw last year. Both were hampered by circumstances out of their control. I don't think it is outside the realm of possibility that there are times when both are on the court, together, and even games they both might start. Keon Johnson and Jaden Springer are both still freshman, and it won't surprise me to see one, or both, struggle at times to the point that one may come off the bench.

We're going to need some offense with the 2nd unit as guys like Big O, Anosike, Uros and Bailey are not that dynamic on the offensive end is another reason I think his role changes. As for rebounding from the point position I'd say JJJ would be considered exceptional at 5+ a game. I think we'll see lots of lineups with JJJ and Vescovi on the floor together just not sure it will be the starting lineup.
