Barnes says he is really happy with his point guards.

We're going to need some offense with the 2nd unit as guys like Big O, Anosike, Uros and Bailey are not that dynamic on the offensive end is another reason I think his role changes. As for rebounding from the point position I'd say JJJ would be considered exceptional at 5+ a game. I think we'll see lots of lineups with JJJ and Vescovi on the floor together just not sure it will be the starting lineup.
You're right, 5+ rpg would be exceptional from the PG position. However, if that is based on what JJJ's 2019-20 rebounding numbers, those numbers are greatly propped up by time spent playing positions other than PG (SF, for example), unlike Vescovi's rebounds which came almost solely from the PG position.

I'm a big fan of Vescovi, think he's a good player, I just feel that his role is going to change some this year. Barnes loves defense and I just don't think he's in the same league as JJJ/Springer/Keon on the defensive end and that's really the main reason I think the others get some of his minutes.

Let;'s look a little closer here: Vescovi's defensive rating, per 100 possessions, was 99.5 and second-best on the team behind Jordan Bowden. His defensive win shares came out to .08 and ranked fifth-best on the team, while JJJ's final defensive wins shares finished third on the team at 1.4 and second on the team in defensive win shares at 96.7. (for the record: Davonte "let's hope he makes some weight," Gaines finished first on the team with a 91.4 d-rating).

With their usage numbers being about equal, JJJ finished fourth on the team with a 19.9 assist percentage, while Vescovi notched a 26.0 assist percentage, ranking him second on the team behind Lamonte who played in just 11 games.

Now -- Vescovi may not be as good on defense as Johnson or Springer, but we'll have to wait and see about that. He may not have passed your eye test, but considering the circumstances, I think his numbers graded out competently.

If Victor Bailey is anything -- based on his time at Oregon where he got inconsistent minutes because the coaches didn't like his effort when his shot wasn't dropping -- he's a scorer. Adjusted for playing time, his offensive rating was 112.0 his freshman season and 111.2 his sophomore year. Both figures would have been second to John Fulkerson on Tennessee's team last season. His 4.1 3-point shots made per 100 possessions would have been the highest number on the Vols, with 'Scovi finishing second with a 3.8 figure.

Ideally, Vescovi and Bailey get most of the lead guard minutes while Springer and Johnson get acclimated to the college game (I don't think that's gonna take much time). Then, get both of the freshman guards handling the ball in some early-season mop-up duty games. Maybe trial by embers instead of trial by fire.

I think JJJ is best suited on the wing where his rebounding abilities can be better utilized. He finished second to ORN in defensive-rebound percentage and third in total rebound percentage behind ORN and the Fulk-meister.

This is all just my opinion of course, and if Springer and Johnson both turn into immediate stars, the whole dynamic changes. I can't wait.

I hope im wrong but man he was terrible last year. If barnes turns water into wine there then we may go to a final 4.
You could tell he was pressing every time he got the ball. The biggest disappointment was his lack of impact on the defensive end and in rebounding. Barnes should tell him to not even worry about scoring unless it’s a gunner layup or dunk. There’s enough scoring on this team.

Too many folks underestimate Vescovi. For a 17 year old who showed up after Christmas, his contributions were amazing. I expect he will make huge strides both this season and next as he continues to mature

If any of the newcomers have the same type of year that Vescovi had last year (not including the TOs) then I will be thrilled. Not sure everyone recognizes that Vescovi has "it".

You are acting as if 3 guys are all coming in at once and for 10 minutes, last year there was times the 3rd sub didn’t come in at all in the first half. You can sub guys in singularly, doesn’t have to be all at once.

Walker seems to have been forgotten about. If he wasn’t being overshadowed by Johnson and Springer the expectations for him would be off the charts.

Also, has there been an official position announced by the NCAA on whether everybody gets a free year in 2020-21? Potentially redshirting Pember, Gaines, Walker, and/or ORN may not be relevant. I keep forgetting if Uros spent his RS year yet. I think that Bailey has, but still has 2 years remaining. All 6 of those guys could get a lot of minutes AFTER this coming season (Bailey might get substantial minutes in 2020-21). If not 2021-22 then possibly 2022-23 if they are patient and work hard at developing their game.

Everybody gets a free extra year. That was announced in early October. So everyone can play and gets the extra year. Everyone hoping,of course, that Fulky might return. Its a "real" possibility that Anosike will take advantage of the free year and return.

Therefore NOBODY will be redshirting in 2020-21. I think somebody suggested in an earlier post that Gaines should be redshirted.

How about turnovers, where did SV rate there?

I think you're exactly right. I expect plenty of 3 guard sets with some combinations of Vescovi, Keon, Jaden, Bailey, Jo on the floor together. All of them can handle the ball or play off the ball too. Very versatile group. I do expect some mid to high post offense run through EJ or Fulky since they can all work well off the ball, maybe Uros since he'll be able to see over anybody essentially, but I don't know how adept he is as a passer.

Imagine trying to guard that lineup?? Holy smoke! A nightmare once they get their chemistry down. Vesco has got to be licking his chops, thinking about people to throw last second no-look passes to.

And I think Bailey will be something of a surprise for most fans. I really liked what I saw of him in that early scrimmage last year. Strong, good shooter, not afraid to take it to the rack, either.

Huh? Bailey didn’t play?

Eastern New Mexico or the secret scrimmage versus Davidson or somebody?

Nope, just an intrasquad practice style scrimmage with the team. I made a long post about it last year, giving my impressions of all the newcomers, etc., including Bailey, but now I can't find the thing. Maybe it was in October? One of those midnight madness type things. (Except it started like at 5:30 or something).

Got my first look at Plavsic too. He was getting abused down low, which still concerns me. In the practice video recently posted his offensive game looks decent, but then it did in last year's scrimmage too. I noticed both Anosike and Nkamhoua giving Plastic Man fits down low when he was trying to defend them in the post. I know it's still relatively early for him and a small sample size to boot, but he's in year three of college now and I'm starting to wonder if he will ever be more than a few minutes a night guy. If he provides us with an offensive spark like he did against MSU last year (I think 18 points), that would be great. But he pretty much disappeared in all the other games where he saw minutes.
