I'm a big fan of Vescovi, think he's a good player, I just feel that his role is going to change some this year. Barnes loves defense and I just don't think he's in the same league as JJJ/Springer/Keon on the defensive end and that's really the main reason I think the others get some of his minutes.
Let;'s look a little closer here: Vescovi's defensive rating, per 100 possessions, was 99.5 and second-best on the team behind Jordan Bowden. His defensive win shares came out to .08 and ranked fifth-best on the team, while JJJ's final defensive wins shares finished third on the team at 1.4 and second on the team in defensive win shares at 96.7. (for the record: Davonte "let's hope he makes some weight," Gaines finished first on the team with a 91.4 d-rating).
With their usage numbers being about equal, JJJ finished fourth on the team with a 19.9 assist percentage, while Vescovi notched a 26.0 assist percentage, ranking him second on the team behind Lamonte who played in just 11 games.
Now -- Vescovi may not be as good on defense as Johnson or Springer, but we'll have to wait and see about that. He may not have passed your eye test, but considering the circumstances, I think his numbers graded out competently.
If Victor Bailey is anything -- based on his time at Oregon where he got inconsistent minutes because the coaches didn't like his effort when his shot wasn't dropping -- he's a scorer. Adjusted for playing time, his offensive rating was 112.0 his freshman season and 111.2 his sophomore year. Both figures would have been second to John Fulkerson on Tennessee's team last season. His 4.1 3-point shots made per 100 possessions would have been the highest number on the Vols, with 'Scovi finishing second with a 3.8 figure.
Ideally, Vescovi and Bailey get most of the lead guard minutes while Springer and Johnson get acclimated to the college game (I don't think that's gonna take much time). Then, get both of the freshman guards handling the ball in some early-season mop-up duty games. Maybe trial by embers instead of trial by fire.
I think JJJ is best suited on the wing where his rebounding abilities can be better utilized. He finished second to ORN in defensive-rebound percentage and third in total rebound percentage behind ORN and the Fulk-meister.
This is all just my opinion of course, and if Springer and Johnson both turn into immediate stars, the whole dynamic changes. I can't wait.
