I listened to Sports talk today with Wilkerson and Hyams and CTV was asked about stadium renovations/expansion and he brought up the LF line, said a “car is parked there now, doesn’t happen at any other SEC stadium.”

We don’t have to Max out capacity right a way but that’s just wasted space, it doesn’t make much sense.

He said he thinks the ball park can be intimate and intimidating by keeping the fans close to the action.

He never mentioned the entrance or sky or press boxes. It doesn’t seem like he’s asking for a brand new stadium, it seems like he just wants to maximize the footprint we have.

GBO.

Does anyone know the basic story about revenue generation vs cost for the baseball team? Is it a deficit? Profit? Even? Almost even?

There are a few SEC teams that make a small profit or break even with baseball. I don’t know the exact number, most are probably running a deficit.

Thanks. Seems to me AD White's real task is to find ways to increase basevols revenue in order to pay for improvements, given the basic worrisome financial landscape in the athletic department. If he can do that then the baseball team can flourish independent of football revenue.

I think that’s fair. Obviously, the University needs to hold up it’s end of the bargain. It’s also going to take some donors and I believe some of them can now feel more comfortable and confident in the direction of the program than in recent past years.

I also believe Boyd is a pretty smart business guy that can look around at the college baseball landscape and television/streaming/advertising etc... and see a possible path to revenue generation that really have only existed for LSU, Arky, MSU, VU...

I have believed this for a long time, we need to invest in baseball.

Preparation, meet Opportunity. Strike while the iron is hot. There's got to be a market for the game. I think you're right that someone creative in that financial world could find the market and mine it.

You think Vandy is generating much revenue? Paying Corbs what they do and seeing their meager crowds most games (pre-Covid) I definitely don’t see them turning a profit and likely not even breaking even.

Edit: in 2016 (most recent data for a quick search) 4 SEC teams generated a profit; LSU, AM, Ark and OM. Arkansas and OM were in the $15-20k range.

Just going on the articles available. Their fans don’t care much about the regular season because it’s almost a given they’ll host and go deep into the post season. JMO.

If they put this type of product on the field along with a great fan experience, it seems like they should get 2500-3000+ like they did this weekend. If you can do that for a few series after April 1 or so, then you can recoup some of your expenses. Alcohol sales should help too. I say April 1 because people won’t come as often in cooler weather, and basketball is still a draw before then. Danny White knows how to enhance the fan experience.

Additionally, football will help if we can get that back on track. You start winning more in that sport, and i would bet that there are literally millions of more dollars that roll in.

“Even in the SEC, baseball is a losing sport for most of the schools. LSU is an exception, running one of the most profitable baseball programs in the country. Arkansas, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Mississippi and Mississippi State have had profitable seasons too, though not consistently.”

Notice where these teams are located. Way down south. Good weather for most of season. Not like Tenn. Ky. Mo. Vandy where about half of the season cool to cold and wet is the norm. Not many players want to play and practice in this weather let alone fans wanting to sit out for an afternoon or night in these conditions.

I don't ask for much, but we could bring back grass if we had a retractable roof.
As I said in another post, the players and coaches do not want grass. The players have grown up playing on turf and would choose it every time over grass. The true bounces and ability to play when others can't make it way better. We have had 2 series this year where we played when we would not have been able with grass. Plus the guys love it. I know some traditional guys do not but the next generation love turf.

You are saying it. Not much chance for improvement when you preform as a team or staff as we have in the most recent past.

I never understood the initial expansion. They should have developed stands on 3rd base side and created a student balcony down first base without blocking the fraternities view.

There has never been anything done to that facility with any forward thinking.

I was joking. I understand the benefits of turf.

They just put the turf down last year to prevent all the rainout games. I doubt UT will invest in a retractable roof and go back to grass.

I can only imagine what a retractable roof would cost, or the enclosed stadiium to support the roof. But I would imagine it is completely out of the question for a college. I don't know of any college that has one.
