As fast as the official thread moves, I don't know if this data has already been passed on or not. Basilio, however, is now backpedaling on Gruden or any candidate being a done deal at this point. In his opinion, for what it is worth, Dave Hart "is currently handling the real search. He’s won some political clout with the big $$$ people in recent days with his handling of the procuring of the money from Jimmy Cheek on the academic side @ UT."

For this reason, Basilio considers all of this talk about a deal being done with Gruden as way too premature. . . . According to Basilio, Dave Hart spoke yesterday afternoon with "big $$$ and they’ve agreed to let him come up with 2 or 3 finalists at which time big $$$ will help him decide on a choice. It will ultimately be their choice (big $$$) but he’s going to spearhead it."

Basilio further states that "Hart has told big $$$ that he’s going to let them know when he gets down to 3 but until then he’s not going to tell anybody anything. A source I spoke to last night said that Hart is ‘shocked by the way things leak out of UT’s inner circle.’"

In Basilio's continuously changing opinion, "Dave Hart has gained some confidence and trust of the big boys and now he’s going to proceed after this weekend in lining up some interviews and knocking down a workable short list."

As for potential candidates, "Patterson, Gundy and Fisher are high on Hart’s list. Al Golden is very high on the list." With respect to the front-runner, Jon Gruden, Basilio is noncommital, saying simply that "Anything can happen. But Hart now has the full blessing of big $$$ to handle the search until it gets down to nut cutting time. And then they are going to step in and do the deal. That's the way it is going to go."

Wet blanket.

This doesn't make much sense:

But Hart now has the full blessing of big $$$ to handle the search until it gets down to nut cutting time.

All of a sudden, now, Hart is in charge?

Social media is very misleading. If 5 people sports writers were to tweet that gruden is possibly coming then the fan base automatically assumes we have him.

Hart's hands are tied. He has no say in this hire. Do you think the money at UT will allow the future of the football team, which is the life blood of the University, to be left in the hands of a man who has been on the job less than a year? The reason he said that no hiring firm would be used is because the money men have their target. Patterson, Gundy, and even Fisher will not be the key to reviving this program. It has to be a MAJOR hire such as Gruden, Johnson, Cowher etc. Why you think 18 mil was all of a sudden given to the AD? It's to sure up the hire. You don't need 18 mil for Gundy, Golden or any other non-impact hires. This is Big Boy football.

Seriously, if Basillio has proven anything, it's that he has no qualms reporting ANYTHING he hears, regardless if it's credible or not.

He's the radio personality equivalent to a message board.

Basilio changes what he says from day to day. I don't put stock in anything he says, regardless of what it's what I want to hear or not.

A mrsec.com article (As The Gruden Turns: Hogs Swing And Miss, Vols On Deck (And Sources Say They’re In Good Shape) forcefully reiterates this point: "if Gruden is truly 'intrigued' and — as one source told us today — 'can be had, if UT wants him,' then Hart had better think long and hard before going in any other direction. In reality, a proven college coach might be a safer and more successful long-term hire than a pro coach. Especially a pro coach with a reputation for not liking NFL rookies and youngsters. But Volunteer fans have tabbed Gruden as their savior-to-be. Only Bob Stoops would trump Gruden in most fans’ eyes."

I agree. I listen from time to time but he changes his stance daily. It's entertainment more so than news.

I just do not believe any media member knows at this point. They all seem to be all over the place on this one. Only time will tell but I think the further it goes the less likely it is Gruden. There is no way we will be interviewing candidates if Gruden is on the hook.

Tony Basillo has an unhealthy man crush on Al Golden. Dave Hart knows whom is in charge and the selection---he just needs to smile and look pretty and turn the podium over to Gruden when the time comes.

He has flipped flopped the past three days now.

No Gruden
Gruden
No Gruden

I have never heard him say a definite one way or the other. He seems to be in the middle on this one. He has said Gruden is a possiblity but the deal is not done as some are saying.

Edit: i went back and read his blogs for this week and he seems to be leaning on the no Gruden side. I think he is much like me I am hoping for Gruden but will have to see it to believeit.

Again, why the hell is al golden on the list.

Your guess is as good as mine. I sure hope if he gets an interview he really screws it up. The man is like 39-45 as a head coach and will probably jump at an opportunity to get the hell out of miami. Especially for a place like UT. I hope this doesn't happen.

Basilio is a dolt. Anyone looking to him for solid info will end up disappointed.

Somebody should send him a random email with fake info to see if it ends up in his column.

Ok. I agree with that after rethinking it.

However he has strongly persuade yesterday IMO, but he didn't play a card (poker face). I am definitely a wait and see right now, but I feel confident that they are willing to spend the money.

Basillo knows as much as we know. I am not sure all of these "insiders" know anymore than we do either. UT is not going to say who is or is not on their top 5 list. They do not want the info going out on who has or has has not listened to an offer. Makes us look like chumps if you have 2 or 3 coaches turn you down. Hart realizes this. I honestly feel that he and the money men have the coach they want. I think its just a matter of timing on the release. To me the only reason they would go ahead and make the Dooley announcement was that they already had someone on board. Now is that someone Gruden. I highly doubt it. Would I love for it to be him? H*ll yeah. He would be the perfect homerun hire we need. Hey guys atleast one thing . In 2-3 weeks we will know who we got. The way this has been done thus far. I do not see anyone leaking anything out. I think thats how they want it ran.

Patterson would be a damned good hire. The others not as good. But Patterson is solid and I'd welcome him.

Basilio is as accurate of a prognosticator as a weatherman. I give his words a 50/50 chance of being accurate.
