Basilio "backpedals to the 20, the 15," on Gruden or anyone being a done deal

Al Golden's name mentioned 3 years ago MAYBE. But the fact that his name is even uttered this time around makes me really nervous about ol Dave.

Hart's hands are tied. He has no say in this hire. Do you think the money at UT will allow the future of the football team, which is the life blood of the University, to be left in the hands of a man who has been on the job less than a year? The reason he said that no hiring firm would be used is because the money men have their target. Patterson, Gundy, and even Fisher will not be the key to reviving this program. It has to be a MAJOR hire such as Gruden, Johnson, Cowher etc. Why you think 18 mil was all of a sudden given to the AD? It's to sure up the hire. You don't need 18 mil for Gundy, Golden or any other non-impact hires. This is Big Boy football.

I agree! There is no way in hell that the big dogs let a brand new AD that makes $750000 a year decide the future of UT! NO WAY!!!!

Patterson would be a damned good hire. The others not as good. But Patterson is solid and I'd welcome him.

I agree. Gruden is clearly the frontrunner, in terms of the fanbase, but I would not be the least bit disappointed if we landed Patterson or Stoops, if he is actually interested in leaving Norman. After all of the hype associated with Grudenmania, anybody else would be a major letdown, considering the fact that the AD, Chancellor, and monied interests are in unanimous agreement that we need to pony up the big bucks and swing for the fences on this hire.

Basilio had a caller that said it was a done deal, he never said that himself. I've listened to his show almost every day for the last 4 years (yeah I know). He's reported what he's been told by his sources. He's a fan and alumni of UT, so you have to listen and take what he says at that.

What worries me is if Hart tries to be the wildcard in this. I think the final decision has to go through him, and he could throw his toys out the pram if Gruden isn't "his guy." From the sounds of it, the big money is doing this deal, and the AD is almost totally in the dark. Hart might not play along.

If Hart mucks up the Gruden deal, it will not be long at all before he joins Dooley on the unemployment line.

As fast as the official thread moves, I don't know if this data has already been passed on or not. Basilio, however, is now backpedaling on Gruden or any candidate being a done deal at this point. In his opinion, for what it is worth, Dave Hart "is currently handling the real search. HeÂ’s won some political clout with the big $$$ people in recent days with his handling of the procuring of the money from Jimmy Cheek on the academic side @ UT."

For this reason, Basilio considers all of this talk about a deal being done with Gruden as way too premature. . . . According to Basilio, Dave Hart spoke yesterday afternoon with "big $$$ and theyÂ’ve agreed to let him come up with 2 or 3 finalists at which time big $$$ will help him decide on a choice. It will ultimately be their choice (big $$$) but heÂ’s going to spearhead it."

Basilio further states that "Hart has told big $$$ that he’s going to let them know when he gets down to 3 but until then he’s not going to tell anybody anything. A source I spoke to last night said that Hart is ‘shocked by the way things leak out of UT’s inner circle.’"

In Basilio's continuously changing opinion, "Dave Hart has gained some confidence and trust of the big boys and now heÂ’s going to proceed after this weekend in lining up some interviews and knocking down a workable short list."

As for potential candidates, "Patterson, Gundy and Fisher are high on HartÂ’s list. Al Golden is very high on the list." With respect to the front-runner, Jon Gruden, Basilio is noncommital, saying simply that "Anything can happen. But Hart now has the full blessing of big $$$ to handle the search until it gets down to nut cutting time. And then they are going to step in and do the deal. That's the way it is going to go."

Anyone who believes that these boosters trust Hart with their money to make the right decision is foolish. He is their puppet and will do as they tell him or he will be unemployeed. This is a smoke screen. Perhaps got his feelings hurt.

Is all the progress that was made yesterday gone today? Yesterday we had 18 mil with gru's name on it. we had reputable(?) media members saying it was a done deal. We had an announcement date for god's sake.

Just saw that Golden insists again that he's committed to Miami. Best news I've heard in this whole coaching search.

I just hope that this announcement is "set in stone," as opposed to being a smoke screen a la Saban and the Dolphins.

You people running down Al Golden obviously know nothing about him, Golden saved the Temple football program from being scrapped altogether rebuilding that program from the ground up, he's winning some games at Miami despite losing 22 starters to either suspension or dismissal. Dude is a solid football coach and excellent recruiter. TN could do much, much worse than Al Golden.

We know enough by looking at stats.
27-34 @ temple
12-11 @ miami

We have already had our Dooley era, no need to get some rerun action on that. Plenty of better talent out there.

Look at Temple's record for the 10 yrs prior to his arrival and get back to me. The University was going to do away the program and gave it one last shot with Golden and he produced a winner.
