if a thread on a fansite, that has several different names mentioned in it, changes this kids mind then he probably was never that "committed" in the first place.
I don't think that's the issue.
Here's a scenario:
Recruit X visits UT under guise of secrecy.
Informed person tells rumors of his presence.
We discuss the potential identity for the recruit X.
Rival fan of whose team potential recruit X is committed to reads our boards.
Rival fan reports on their board these rumors.
The insiders on that board contact the rival school's coaching staff.
Rival school's coaching staff contacts recruit X about visit to UT.
Recruit X is pissed his visit wasn't kept secret and chooses not to commit to UT due to the breaking of trust.
There ya go.

How are people so obtuse? You can't begin to imagine the amount of crap these kids get slung at them by overzealous idiot fans. Not to mention the kid probably wants to inform the school he is committed to before everyone else in the world finds out.Silent commits amaze me. why dont the kids just grow a pair and say hey! I wanna be a vol!!!!! Why is that so hard?

This. The kid probably is trying to do the right thing and inform the other school of what he is doing instead of leaving without saying anything and just letting the school find out.
Doing the right thing by "secret" meetings, trips, phone calls, etc.
Then an attempt to remove all evidence, even if someone kept recordings of it all?
It must be Richard M. Nixon.

he has every right to visit other places, he was with 100,00 other people so it's not like he hid it
He has every right to visit other places. Absolutely, and he did hide it, even if he hid it in the open where everyone, and therefore almost no-one, was able to see it.
If he wanted to do the right thing by his other school, he should have made that call FIRST. First, yes. First. As in, the first call.

The second call, head nod, tip of the hat, wink wink should have come after that call. Period.
Integrity: Doing the right thing, even when no-one is looking.
Some have it, others do not.
Good pickup, though. Terrible management, even if it does stick.
how could he know he was going to decommit before the visit? the whole point was he was swayed by his visit and Dooley, which is what changed his mind.
I wasn't saying he should have backed out of his commit before the visit.
However, after the visit, when he had that little one on one, or one on many with whomever was involved, and they said: So, you ready to come to Tennessee?
That was when he could have made that call.
Or, said "Let me think about, I'll get back to you." And then made the call.
Or, said "Can I borrow your phone?"
Or, said "May I use my phone?"
The point I am making is, if he verbal'd to Tennessee prior to removing himself from consideration from his other team; then obviously he wasn't trying to "do right" by the other school.
He was trying to date two chics at once; and one of us went snooping.
1) A recruit's right to privacy exceeds a school's right to know what said recruit's actions are. If they want to discourage visits to other schools, make it clear like Saban does.
2) A school has the ability to rescind a scholarship offer anytime between now and NSD, and it goes both ways. The school is constantly looking at other options and so is the recruit.
3) Can you blame the kid for wanting to avoid the swarms of press, recruiters, and home town fans that would follow as a result of his switch in commitment? I think he's doing the smart thing by trying to keep it quiet for a month while he prepares for his decision. Speaking of that, he's making this decision in December, giving his prior school a respectful two months to recuperate from its loss.
That's the nature of recruiting.
