Basilio says Offensive Tackle a big concern

I’m more concerned about the interior o line. Who is going to start at left guard? Lane, or Karic? And if Nichols isn’t going to play guard has he at least solidified himself as the backup center, or is it still Lane?

Also who is next up at guard..Lampley, Reddick, or Lang? We already have a pretty good idea what tackle will look like.
IMO, Lane will probably start out the season then get taken over by a more talented player. Could be Karic or one of the other young guys.

Yea that’s kind of what I was thinking. It will be interesting to see if Reddick or Clipper are ready to help this year. Would be nice

VQ also was very excited about the summer Karic had. This might explain why nichols has been left to work at C

I'm a little more concerned about a backup center, although I figure CGE will get that worked out by the time it may become a problem.
Offense
The only pure offensive absence I noted from Monday’s practice was center Cooper Mays. Mays has had injury concerns in the past which has made the Vols’ backup center competition one of great importance this fall. With Mays out today, Parker Ball, Vysen Lang and Braden Krivosh all earned extra reps at the spot.
One person who I surprisingly didn’t see get any center reps in Mays’ absence is redshirt freshman Addison Nichols. Nichols repped exclusively at center in the spring but is in the competition for the starting left guard spot. The Georgia native could have repped at center but I didn’t see any in the limited time I watched the offensive line.

From VQ, which contradicts the revious link

With Mays not out there on Monday, sophomore Addison Nichols was taking snaps with the first group at center. He had previously been taking reps with the third team, but if push comes to shove, Nichols would snap the football in place of Mays in a game setting. The starting five on the offensive line (outside of Mays) remained as it did last week (l-to-r) John Campbell, Ollie Lane, (Addison Nichols), JaVontez Spraggins, JJ Crawford. Thursday’s scrimmage will be big in terms of the competition at left guard and right tackle.

From Mays Interview:

“Vysen and Addison have taken a step forward I think behind me. They are both big, strong guys that can hold up in the middle as long as they can get the fine details of the offense down it will be good,” Mays said.

At the guard spot Mays said there is plenty of bodies there, but it’s a group of young guys that needs lots of reps.

“You look at the guard spot and we have a lot of young guys at that spot. Mo Clipper, Masai Reddick and Addison Nichols plays all the inside spots. Getting them more experience in our offense and in the college game. It’s a hard thing to adjust to. I think they have taken steps forward in changing their bodies around and getting stronger.”

Mays has also taken on responsibility on the leadership front for Tennessee’s offensive front.

“I have had to take on a new role for our team,” Mays said. “I feel like I was a pretty good leader last year. I have taken over a lot of Jerome’s (Carvin) role. I have been trying to run with it and do the best I can at it. It’s been going pretty well.”

Saw that too. One guy said he didn't and this report said he did.

That's not the first time this preseason that guys' reports contradicts each other.

Just found this interesting.
Basilio isn’t always correct.
Hope he’s wrong here.
The Tony Basilio Show
(scroll down to the segment labeled Orange Throat/No news is good news).

Insiders are more optimistic about Rodney Garner's defensive front than Glen Elarbee's offensive line.

Did you ever think that just maybe we have an outstanding DL?

Ahhh the old Basillio sky is falling routine........a tale as old as time.

Can we at least get into full pads and let these guys practice real football before we start freaking out?
A good coach will ALWAYS be concerned about weaknesses. Say what you will about Saban, part of the reason he is the legend he is is because he is always worried.
And as other have said, any time you have to replace a generational level performer like Wright, you better have your ducks in a row

Just about to post the same thing bishna! Heup's Vols already play fast.
Harsin has a victory against Saban if these rules were in effect. Someone with better game recall could prolly project the Buckeyes over UGA in the most recent playoffs. Historically, Shuler has a win (instead of a tie) against Bama. The most likely forces behind this change may end up regretting.

I never understood why any fan thought this was a good idea. It will reduce the number of plays per game for most teams. UT's O probably mitigates that some.

It could also offer an opportunity for some teams to use a Valvano strategy before the shot clock. He just put guys on the court who could run clock. Unless CFB shortens the play clock... you could see someone like UK go run heavy and take the clock down on every play. They could potentially consume a whole quarter in one drive.

Of all the recent changes, I think this one is the worst by far. And I despise the targeting rule.

Hope you at right. Rule changes just always make me nervous

Re: consuming a whole quarter….I mean is that any different now? The remedy is still the same, prevent a First down at some point and get off the field. The play clock is going to start eventually even under the current rules

Nobody is replacing Wright. I don't expect anyone on this OL to go 10th in the '24 NFL Draft. That would certainly be something to behold if they did considering there's not a 5 star OL on the roster.

I do think that Crawford can plug the hole though. I thought he did a pretty good job at LT last year. Campbell sounds like he has taken over on the left side. Mincey got better last season too. This is Dayne Davis' 10th season in Knoxville. To say we have big concerns at OT is a slap in all their faces iyam. It sounds like they all worked very hard this offseason as a unit.

Maybe Basilio's right, maybe he's not. They just started practicing real football today, so I'm willing to give the coaches the benefit of the doubt on this one and let camp play out a little longer before I write those guys and this team off. Needless to say, if he's right, this team is in for some deep doo doo. Without an OL, this O goes nowhere fast.
