I also believe that First responders, if there is a complaint by the patient of loss of feeling combined with a mechanism, are supposed to immobilize the spine for transport. Why would they not immobilize him if there was serious loss of feeling?

The dude had zero problems with his legs. Spinal injuries work from bottom to top.

He was in that locker room for a loooong time; like 3 quarters and halftime i think

I imagine all the tests on whether he could feel or even hold or try to throw a football (or regain feeling) were all being done back there during that time

believe me, if they could have gotten him back in the game at all, they would have; they were seeing everything back there
They sat with him on the sideline for several minutes, then took his gear off and he walked into the locker room/xray room. Returned at the beginning of the second half dressed out and with his Dad by his side.

Immobilize the whole body because he couldn't feel his arm?

I'm no doctor, but I'm fairly certain if there was a spinal cord injury, he wouldn't have been standing around.

Sometimes they can and can cause serious harm to themselves.

? ..... If there is a mechanism and loss of feeling, you immobilize.

Brain is in head. Spinal cord travels from head to butt. If something near the butt is fine, but something up close to the head isn't, the cord hasn't been interrupted.

i thought he wasnt back out till mid or later in the third?

He got hit on his shoulder. No one was worried about his spine.

MECHANISM = something that could concievably cause an injury to ,in this case, back or neck. Like a football hit.

Complaint of loss of feeling.

First responders immobilize c-spine.

If there's some vertebral fracture or something causing a small spinal injury, those bones can shift around and cause a more severe injury. That wasn't a concern here.

Even tough the hit was on his shoulder, it still could concievably, though not likely, be a mechanism for spinal injury.
No?

No?

I suppose a whiplash type thing could be a concern, but if you watch the hit, it's pretty obvious that didn't happen.

he was still standing, walking and moving the entire time, it wasn't spinal; he got hit in the shoulder, which just meant nerves from there down were impacted...it wasn't like his entire arm wasnt moving

if he had been on the ground for a while and hadnt gotten up, that'd be another story and you'd have seen the cart / stretcher

If I had to hazard a guess, he was probably advise to go to a hospital for an MRI, but chose to stay and watch the game.

Quite possible. Maybe I am way off base. I am glad we can have a rational discussion. Though GAvol still cannot sustain from juvenile comments.

I apologize . . . Once I see guy on message board doling out armchair sports medicine opinions, this is all I've got.

If you are a juvenile then you are a juvenile, no need to apologize. For the record, I deal with sports injuries fairly regularly. I know one thing. I deliver the care that is expected of someone with my training and NO ONE leaves my care with any possibility of successfully suing me.
