BCS National Championship

He just won an NC. He is out of breath. He's barely 20.

He seemed fine the rest of the night .

Point being, don't judge on speech. Guy was a 4.0 GPA HS student. He 's not a brick.

This. If I had just won an NC, especially one as down to the wire as this, my mind would be all over the place.

I'm not big on pulling for the conference. It would have been nice if the SEC had gone unbeaten for the life of the BCS, but...

...it's Auburn, so screw 'em.

I take it you meant unbeaten in the championship games for the life of the BCS?

Still impossible

Florida State, Miami, Ohio State, Texas all won NC during the BCS era

Right. Which means SEC teams weren't even good enough to get to the title game those years.

The universe is realigning again. Get ready for the PAC 12 to rise next. Their top teams had by far the highest SOS this year.

They also didn't have a single team finish with fewer than two losses. Playing a tough SOS doesn't mean much if you can't overcome it.

What?
- Signed Boise State

SoS only means something in the polls and BCS when they want to use it as an excuse to eliminate specific teams from playing in the big games.

Most of the top 10 teams had cupcakes schedules, actually Auburn was one of the few that didn't.

It's all about scheduling now, preseason rankings, and if the school is a big name. It's a scam and will continue to be a scam.

Boise State is a terrible example as their strength of schedule, on average, hasn't just been worse than the teams selected ahead of them, it's been horrendous.

Just in terms of years when the Broncos had a record on par with one of the title game participants:

2005:
Texas - #15 SOS
USC - #27
Boise St - #95

2008:
Oklahoma - #2 SOS
Florida - #5
Boise St - #93

2009:
Alabama - #6 SOS
Texas - #19
Cincinnati (also unbeaten) - #42
Boise St - #102

2011:
LSU - #2 SOS (which is kind of a joke, but the Big XII was over-inflated because of the 9 game schedule, and Kansas earned the #1 by getting their brains beaten in)
Alabama - #11
Boise St - #66

Exactly. SoS only means something, if you are not a big name school. Florida State had a SoS of 62 before last night, that includes the ACC championship game. Take that game out and you are looking at 65-80 range.

If Boise State had a SoS of 70-80, they would not have made it in to the NC game even with zero losses. It's a scam, everyone knows it.

Florida State had before last night the 2nd worse SoS of the top 10 teams and only 2 teams in the whole top 25 had a worse SoS than FSU ie UCF and Louisville.

Is it any surprise they made it to the dance and won it? No, the only played two top 30 teams before last night.

Scheduling, scheduling, scheduling plus being a big school.

I missed your point before, sorry.

You're right, but the BCS created this monster. While SOS is a factor, the key fact in determining the title game participants is the perception of the conference you play in.

I would say it depends on the school and/or conference. If Duke had run the tables and been undefeated they wouldn't have made it either.

The playoff is just going to be a bigger scam, the first time they have two teams from the same conference.... watch.

I'm not sure I agree with that. Depends on where their opponents finished.

We won't have to wait very long. If recent history is any indication, the SEC will have two teams in the playoff this year.

I would also add that sometimes the media hypes up teams that really don't need to be as highly ranked as they are. Northern Illinois, Boise State, Fresno State and Louisville are all examples of teams over the past few years that have been the darlings of the media community that were ranked (in my opinion) higher than they ever should have been based purely on strength of schedule.

Conference alignments is secondary IMO to how much the sportswriters like your program. This year it happened to be Louisville. Even after losing to UCF they still spent another two weeks ahead of them in the polls even though it was clear UCF was a better team. They were the "darling" this year and it showed in the way they were ranked.
