I'll jump in here: "It's the NFL, not college..." doesn't hold so much anymore with the "protect the QB rules". Set run plays for the QB are about 10 times what they were 15 to 20 years ago. However, I'm not as concerned with giving him called run plays as I am encouraging him to break from the progressions and take off. O'Connell was telling him in that first game: "Don't forget your legs." With limited knowledge of the playbook, Josh's legs were a primary option. Now, it seems they're a last resort. He should have had 8 to 10 runs instead of looking for his 3rd, 4th, or 5th read. Check, check, go.
