Belmont upset UNC today 83-80. They always seem to be ready to play and know how to run their system. Hmmmmmmm. Remember a few years ago when they almost upset Duke in the NCAA TOURNEY. Seems I remember the name of their coach Rick Byrd came up when we hired CCM, but I don't think he was given much thought. He grew up in Knoxville. Maybe his East Tennessee accent wasn't sexy enough for viewing on a national scale or maybe those in charge of hiring thought he might not bring in enough highly ranked recruits.
I don't know. Might want to give him some thought next time we have to hire a coach. Just saying.

Great to see the mid- majors upset the "big boys" especially in the ACC. Guess the "fire Roy Williams" threads have started in Chapel Hill.

He's been at Belmont since the mid 80s. I think its been his choice to stay at Belmont.

I understand why he would rather live in Nashville, but you would think the financial security that would come with a contract with the Vols would be hard to turn down ( he may be independently wealthy already for all I know), but at least he should be kept in mind if the need arises.

Why would he come to this mess of fans in Knoxville. As soon as things don't go the way we plan we are calling for his head. He is probably be paid plenty with a lot less stress at Belmont he won't come here.

He interviewed for the job. Wasn't selected. Let's not act as though it was his choice to stay at Belmont.

Yeah your right. He gets to hob nob with celebs here. Vince Gill is a big fan and has gotten others involved with supporting the team. If he went to UT he would have to answer to VolNation and that would spoil it.

Good coach, but they don't always translate to the high D1 level. Recruiting would be a concern. I think his age is a concern, too. JMO.

No. When interviewed on 104.5, before last season he basically said he would've taken the job in a heartbeat, without saying as much seeing as how he is currently employed. He said he thought he would've been a more serious candidate but he guesses they were looking for someone from a bigger program (or program coaching tree) and probably someone younger than himself.

My two concerns with Byrd had we hired him would've been his age and big boy recruiting ability. His coaching is phenomenal and he'd be the coach on the Hill if we had only asked.

Why do people make such a big deal about this? Does it bother you that much that someone starts a topic that indirectly relates to UT bball and places it in the UT bball thread? I swear people just like to ***** and show others up.

What does Belmont beating UNC have to do with UT basketball?

Cuonzo's voice ain't sexy either, but he does have an impressive scowl for what it's worth.

Bryd has a secure job, is pretty well known in the coaching community. If he took a high level job and didn't do as well, it could end his career considering his age. Not that he wouldn't have taken the job at UT or any other major but there are some benefits of being at Belmont.

His name has come up for other openings but I don't think he has the sexy resume many want. Smart guy and gets the most out of his kids.
