Ben Howland

Without throwing either's body of work out, I think it is fair to say that Howland had a major recruiting advantage, don't you?

I agree we can't take his accomplishments away, but it seems comparing the two should be put into a little better perspective.

Pastner has a hell of a recruiting advantage in Memphis, he hasn't made a final four.

And it's not as if Pearl recruited poorly, he recruited very well, but still didn't make 1 final four. In fact, pearls most talented teams weren't exactly his most successful, so saying he would've made a final four if he was at UCLA seems a bit foolish IMO.

Recruiting advantages aside, he still has to get the team to the Final Four.

He also was at a place that had expectations well above that of Tennessee.

Not many places will fire you after a 25-9 season, so I don't disagree.

But you can't put the recruiting advantage aside cause that was my question. :) jk

Couple of things:

1. I never said he would have made the final 4 if he was at UCLA. I was just asking if he thought their was a recruiting advantage. If it seemed I was insinuating that, then my apologies.

2. If we are comparing apples to apples we shouldn't have this convo till BP has 4 more years here.(and nobody should be 100% convinced that will ever happen)

and 3. You brought CJP into a conversation of accomplished coaches. :eek:lol:

Sorry, the final fours part was lumping others thoughts in with your post.

and how many wins on the way to Pearl's final fours?

It's a ridiculous argument that can't be won no matter which side u r on.....pearl did not coach as many yrs as Howland did at a high major before his first final four. Pearl also didnt get the opportunity to coach at one of college basketball greatest programs......that being said I will be happy with either pearl or howland and don't care which one we get.

If there was a change as far as Coach, then I would make my first call to Ben Howland. At Pittsburgh, made sweet 16 twice. Left for UCLA, made the NCAA tournament 7 times in 10 years with 3 Final Fours with 1 being Runner Up. Everybody can be on the Bruce Pearl Bandwagon, but its not going to happen. If they do fire Cuonzo, then get Ben Howland. He can recruit talent as well.

Sounds like a good resume to me.
