Ben Howland

I think there's a BPIP (Bruce Pearl In Process) at Nebraska right now. Some definite similarities in personality and results. Don't sleep on this guy.

If we can't have Frank, Howland is choice two for me. I think Howland and Barnes are similar by both coaches having great jobs making tons of money and then getting extremely comfortable. Its just Barnes paid attention when ppl talked and Howland didn't.

Over Marshall and Smart?

And what exactly is Pearl?

Pearl is definitely not a "retread". A retread is a coach who is fired because he can't get the job done from a win-loss perspective. Pearl's firing obviously had nothing to do with his ability to win. I would call Howland a retread long before I put Pearl in that category, although I think Howland would be a damn good hire.

Yeah... because recruiting to Tennessee is the same as recruiting to UCLA.

UCLA's location and basketball program are far superior to Tennessee.

Most of his recruits were from California anyways. Not hard to sell 5* recruits on going to UCLA when they were born in California and grew up Bruins fans.

You're hallucinating if you don't think Howland had a built in advantage recruiting at UCLA.
His last class didn't have any California kids. 2 from Georgia, 1 from New Jersey, and 1 from LV...oh yeah and it was a top 5 class. He recruited like that at Pittsburg too.

Not to mention, those 2 Georgia kids were likely heady for UT. Jordan Adams was a heavy UT lean when the bump happened with Pearl.

Yeah, I was really impressed with some of those years at UCLA before and after he made those 3 final 4 runs. I am always impressed when a coach takes a major program on a 14-18 season. I can see why UCLA fired him.

So basically you ignore any years that doesn't fit with what you want to think of him. I hate to break it to you but 3 Final Fours > 6 straight NCAAT bids.

And I guess you're impressed with Pearl taking an Elite 8 team and barely making the NCAAT and getting blasted by 30 in the first round.

Im ok with pearl or howland but if u look at their first six yrs at a high major.....pearl had better success than howland......could pearl have made final fours that howland did? Thats debatable but he didnt have as many opportunities as howland yet.

If you want to what if all day, then you can come up with a million different outcomes of what could be. And I'm not narrowing something down to merely 6 years just to fit a window of success.

Look I like Pearl, I would gladly welcome him back, but some of the efforts to downplay Howland and make Pearl look like the better coach are downright retarded.

Do u not think pearl could make a final four coaching at ucla?

I hate the, well he was at UCLA argument. That's like saying could Pearl have won national championships at Duke or Louisville?

Howland was a good enough coach to land himself the UCLA job, Pearl wasn't, you can't use that against Howland.

He went to 3 final fours, do I think Pearl ever does that? No.

Of course you dont like that argument bc it doesnt fit your opinion....How about comparing both coaches at fairly similar institutions....Pittsburgh and Tennessee.....CBP has the slightly better resume there.

The same can be said about why you and others basically throw out anything Howland did at UCLA.

Yeah and what did he do after that 14-18 year?

Without throwing either's body of work out, I think it is fair to say that Howland had a major recruiting advantage, don't you?

I agree we can't take his accomplishments away, but it seems comparing the two should be put into a little better perspective.

Recruiting advantages aside, he still has to get the team to the Final Four.

He also was at a place that had expectations well above that of Tennessee.

Lmao and let's compare Coach k at his previous stop to Martin now.

Like wtf, seriously?
