Berry or Matthieu?

Who was better in college?

If LSU had Peterson, the secondary would go from elite to unfair.

I still don't think it's better than the 2001 Canes group, though.

Ron Brooks will be playing in the NFL, he has had great year as a backup. I have little doubt Ron Brooks would be starting on any other team other than possibly Bama.

The 2001 Canes had at least one backup that would probably start for this LSU team, and that's assuming Antrel Rolle didn't start as a freshman..

I actually think Claiborne is a little over rated, he's still a good player. He is great on the deep routes but he is weak at times on the shorter routes.

Yeah, mathieu is a work in progress but probably will be lsu's next great safety and be on eb's level.

Because of size, I don't think he can ever be Eric Berry. I would've loved to see what EB could do with Matthieu's teammates. Much more opportunity since you have 11 stars to worry about.

Matthieu is a great player but I just don't think he's on EB level. Berry was starting his freshman year and his versatility just better and better. Like one poster said earlier EB was on bad teams and Matthieu is a loaded team. EB was to UT like Dale Murphy was to the Braves, a champion player on a horrible team.

Why is anyone comparing the two? They are different players at different positions.

Berry is bigger and much more versatile around the defensive side of the ball. He can cover, support, play weakside linebacker and hit.

Mathieu reminds me of Cortland Finnegan in his stature and style of play.

One can play LB, S or CB and was a top five draft pick. The other is arguably not even the best DB on his own team. This shouldn't even be a discussion.

Mattheiu has the "IT" Factor. He is more of an impact player on LSU's team than Berry was on Tennessee's team. When the Honey Badger gets it going, so does LSU and then they can't be beat. He was the one that got them going against Georgia. He will play in the pros, but I think he will be a specialist. He is deadly at running back kick-offs and punt returns. His size precludes him being an every down CB.

This is when I wonder if people here are actually serious.

I think he's right, but the situations were necessarily different with Matthieu being a playmaker surrounded by talent which frees him up to do what he does. Berry was the sole great player on that defense, he couldn't be risked in special teams.

If you mean impact player in terms of creating turnovers (forcing fumbles), then sure. But if "impact" means having the most impact on a play-to-play basis--covering everyone else's mistakes and being the best and most important player on the defense by a longshot--I'm taking Berry and it's not even close.

No, just pointing out that Mathieu has had many more opportunities with the ball than Berry has because he's surrounded by elite talent.
