Best: 1974
Going for a win on a two point conversion over Clemson instead of settling for a tie.
Worst: 1975
We were 40.5 point favorites over 1-9 North Texas State. We were playing crappy all day. Tennessee tied the game 14-14 with under 5 minutes remaining, so we had hope.
But right after our TD, they returned the kickoff 98 yards for the winning touchdown. Besides the few NTS fans celebrating, you could hear a pin drop with all of us shocked Tennessee fans exiting Neyland.

If I’d been there for that game, brother, I’d be saying the same thing.I’ve been to games since the 70s. I’ve seen a lot. Florida last year was nice. The Arkansas fumble, Neyland going quiet during commercials, and then Cheese, walking onto the field while the rest of the team was already in the huddle, slapping his chest and yelling at the Arkansas Defense “I’m coming MFers….get ready….I’m coming!!!” And having Neyland go crazy…….is easily the grandest moment I’ve experienced in the holy temple of Knoxville.
But that’s just my experience
UGA/Jennings was my pick for the best also. Lived in GA. since 1980. Nothing better than beating the dawgs. The worst for me was Tennessee losing their home game to Georgia State. Sums up Jeremy Pruitt’s tenure.
The best was Jennings Hail Mary catch in Athens. So satisfying walking through Athens seeing a combo of rage and disappointment
I was working that day, and had the sole responsibility of checking the only radio on site for updates, and reporting back to the crews. When we scored that last touchdown, I turned the radio off, thinking that the game would be over by the time I made it back to deliver the news. The news I delivered was that we had won the game. Those who were there that day that I’m still in touch with have never forgiven me for this. The hob nail boot was one of those where we scored on that long screen pass and I immediately thought “oh no, we left too much time”
