Who are the best High Football players you have watched play in person:

Al Wilson he was playing Safety and was just killing ball carriers. You could just see he was going to be special, speed and furious hits.

Dante Hicky (Spelling?) from Cleveland: saw him play several times and in the KY/TN all-star game. He was electric, played WR and returner but never made it to college because of ???. Best player I've seen in person.

Kelly Holcomb, Chad Henderson and a WR named Grogan on the Lincoln County team in the early 90's-time frame. Kelly would throw a 30-yard dart and you could hear hit the guys in the pads up in the stands. I was surprised Kelly didn't go to a bigger school than MTSU but he had an incredible career. I thought Grogan was the best player on the field, he was a big WR who would catch anything near him and I'm sorry I can't remember his first name, no disrespect intended. I don't think he played college ball anywhere and that was a shame because he was very talented.

Kenny Witherspoon (Spelling) RB I think Stradford High and went to Vandy. He was just smooth and had a Walter Payton type running style, not that he was Walter but just he made moves with no effort, just fun to watch.

I hope I got the names and schools correct. Just my opinion so who is yours?

I went to Stratford High in Nashville, Kenny Weatherspoon was several years older than me. Ron Robinson (Kentucky) was a senior QB/Safety my freshman year. I was on the team (didn't play much, lol) with Joe Campbell (MTSU) and Corey Fleming, they were one and two years younger than me, each. Joe was an incredibly gifted runner, amazing "pad speed" for a smaller guy...helluva basketball player, also. We played against guys like Keith Davis (UT) from Overton H.S., Shawn Malone from Antioch, and Brad "Goober" Gaines (Vandy) from DuPont H.S. My one stat line EVER was tackling Gaines for a short/no gain in his last H.S. game. Cool Story!

David Grogan I believe was his name. UT wanted him along with just about everyone else. Not sure what happened .

I'll add:
Ricky Blake RB, Eddie Blake OL, Benny Jennings WR (Jauan's father), Anthony Shelton DB. All at Lincoln County.

Kind of surprised with your boro connection that the name Locke did not crop up. Riverdale had a heck of a run. Got to meet Rankin before a LC game when Coach Louis Thompson introduced us right after their team bus arrived long before a game. They seemed to have a lot of respect for each other. Odd he came to Alcoa and I moved 6 miles down the road within months.

I saw all of those Lincoln County guys a lot living there during that period. Pretty sure my aging mind correctly recalls Mr. Grogan being a David. The other names from there for sure would be the Blake brothers (Rickey and ???) in the OL of AU fame, though the most famous Falcon would be Jim Bob Cooter. Wife had migrated from a Jr High to LCHS when he was there. For the life of me I cannot recall the QB that came along later that was excellent. He went juco and then disappeared. Things have changed with the addition of a City high school splitting up the talent. They do well in the lower classifications but times have been hard at LCHS for quite a while.

Most of you too young to know who he was but he played at a tiny West Tennessee school before going to Ole Miss, then 6 time Pro Bowl selection

I saw Darrel Middleton and Tee Higgins play at Oak Ridge. Darrel played TE in high school.
My nephew played against that Oak Ridge team. I was impressed with Tee, but hey only had to throw a few times, but Middleton did nothing on offense and took 2 out of 3 plays off on defense...lol. His was huge for a high school kid

This is an interesting topic for an unrelated reason. When Doug Dickey was hired he went around the state speaking to alumni groups. There were no recruiting organizations/companies in those days so coaches had to rely on player recommendations from fans, coaches and referees.
I went to one of his talks and remember him saying he welcomed suggestions but didn't want to know about the best player we had seen that year or in the past 10 years. He only wanted to hear about them if they were the best player we had ever seen.

I watched Sam Gash, Carl Pickens, Heath Shuler, Jonathan Crompton. All were impressive.

I played against Shawn Bryson and Leonard Little. Bryson would hurt your feelings when he hit you.

I was tasked with blocking Little and most plays required scheming and double teaming to keep you at bay. My claim to fame is us beating his very dominant team to go on to win the conference back in 1992.

I got to watch Iowa City High with Tim Dwight go against Bettendorf High with Tavian Banks. Both went on to play at Iowa and it was awesome to watch that game. They were both men among boys and unstoppable.

D.J. Shockley, he did it all. Played QB, returned kickoffs and punts. He was like a grown man playing with kids.

I watched Marion County a lot back in those days. After 1 or 2 plays with Eric either on defense or offense you call tell he was the best player on the field. Never seen anyone that could take over control the game on both sides of the LOS like he could. Best RB I've watched in HS except for Leroy Thompson. But best overall player I have ever watched on the HS level. I believe during his time at MC they won 3 state champs in 4 years, and lost a semi final game 7-6 in pouring down game...the LB from South Pittsburg was good also, but you could tell he was destined for LB in college, but i thought Eric would always be a RB...

Until they played Maryville? Maryville used to get boat raced all the time back in the 90s. Especially by Oak Ridge. They definitely were not the force they are now when, Shawn Summers/ Bohannon were playing.
