I've never really listened to their music, but i watch Jimmy Fallon every night and i enjoy them on there a lot

Check them out man. Highly recommend it. When it comes to pure hip hop skill not many people can stand up to them. They are def 1000x better than all the whack rappers out nowadays.

Group: Beasties, Outkast, Wu Tang, UGK

Solo: Biggie, Jay-Z, Eminem

Rarely listen to many new artists, although Macklemore's pretty damn good so far

With Thrift shop, I honest thought at first it was something Tyler the Creator had come up with, it just sounded that out there. I found out dude was white and didn't even have a contract. I looked him up, listened to his stuff, and now I fully believe he's the 3rd best white rapper alive right now, behind Eminem and Mac Lethal.

Kid rock doesn't count anymore, but in his early day I'd have him at 2/3 honestly.

You really need to listen to some more white rappers then.

I mentioned the roots as my runner up group. They are one of the few groups I will purchase their new album the day it is released.

They are killer live too. I'm not big into concerts but I would definitely go see them again. Although I read an interview with Questlove that they took the Fallon gig so they don't have to travel as much now that they have school aged children.

Agreed. I am actually reading Questloves book Mo Metta Blues right now. I suggest every hip hop fan read it.

Or you should listen to more. Because I would wager I listen to more music than anyone in this topic so far, especially when it comes to hip hop and rap.

Palko is good, Aesop rock is as well (top 5 really), MC serch is good too. But success and good are not always equivalent. Talib Kweli is living proof that being good with lyrics and meaning doesn't mean ****. Unless you can find a medium of saying important things AND sell records, then you're useless, and Macklemore has already outdone all the guys I just mentioned in top hits, and he just so happens to have a few out right now that actually have some meaningful substance behind them while also getting consistent airplay.

Being underground and good is pointless. If you can't even get heard and seen by millions in the youtube age, then you're not as good as you think. Its the same thought process that people disliked apple products for so long (while many still do) and people still dislike hipsters for, they think they are unique and special because not many do what they do, or maybe, just maybe, they aren't that good to begin with.

Wow. This post is exactly what's wrong with music nowadays. Not everyone wants to sell out. Not everyone wants the record label to dictate what kind of music they will produce. Going mainstream has a lot of negatives as well. If an artist is not willing to surrender his artistic freedom why would he go mainstream? Look at Kanye. I have always had mad respect for him. But his music nowadays doesn't even compare to graduation and college dropout. People like Kweli and Mos Def could def go mainstream if they wanted to. I doubt you listen to more hip hop than anybody here. Hell I will put an MC like MF DOOM over any mainstream artist and he will destroy them. But my criteria for an artist being good is all about music. Whereas you believe the only way a musician is good is if he goes mainstream.

I'm not really sure what the second half of this paragraph means but I think plenty of people, including many "underground" artists, would vehemently disagree with the first sentence. As hard as it is to believe, there are artists out there whose main goal isn't album sales. I'm sure none of them would have any problem if album sales came along with it but some actually view it as an art form, not a paycheck.

I personally don't care for Em because I don't like his voice or delivery but I don't discredit him because I recognize his talent from a writing standpoint. However, you yourself listed two I'd put way above Macklemore (who I tend to think is terrible) in Rock and MC Serch. On top of those I'd gladly listen to Brother Ali, El-P, Slug, Grynch, R.A. Scion to name a few off the top of my head.

McDonald's makes the best hamburger because they sell more.

Immortal Technique will never be a mainstream artist but I wouldn't dare call him pointless.

Finally watched the Tribe Called Quest documentary. As a long time fan, I'm a bit ashamed it took me so long to get to it. Great movie on one of my all time favorite groups in all of music, much less hip hop.

They never make the comparison in the movie but they are kind of like the Beatles of hip hop (ok, Bob Power does call the Low End Theory the Sgt Pepper of hip hop). Like Lennon and McCartney the chemistry between Q-Tip and Phife is part of what made them so enduring. Then a rift tore them apart. Both have put out some quality solo albums but it always seems like a piece is missing.

An "underground" artist can make plenty of cash with virtually none of the problems of a major label artists. The top of the line guys are always going to be on top. But there is loads of cash in underground rap music.

Give me your best/favorite rap group, and also your best/favorite individual rap artist of all time.

You can take a wild guess on my favorite rap group :)

My favorite rap artist of all time is Eminem and its not even close. He is on a whole new level that anyone else has yet to attain. His verb play, rhythm, lyricism... G.O.A.T

What say you?
immortal Technique, K-Rino, Nas, and Q-Tip get my votes.

My fav group is Cypress Hill.

My favorite group is Odd Future. Earl is a monster and Frank Ocean gives them a different element.

Best rapper, Biggie. Best living rapper, Eminem. My favorite, J. Cole (more so because of songs like Return of Simba than because of his actual albums) or College Dropout Kanye.

as of late ive been real big into Ces Cru (Strange Music) and Jarren Benton (Funk Volume)

as for all time
Solo- Eminem
Group- Bone Thugs
