Best Recruiting Class?

the comparison with crews i made was mainly for shotblocking and dunking but you are right he is a much better athlete... the best comparison i would say would be with detroit piston jason maxiell (yes im from detroit so this is easy for me) but both are undersized power forwards with insane athletic ability and can make big momentum plays by blocking shots or slamming in dunks

Just a heads up here in Las Vegas: There's some youth b-ball tournament going on here right now and there are UT recruiters (I assume they're legit recruiters and not boosters) everywhere. My relatives from the Atlanta area brought a group of soon-to-be Seniors they sponsor over here and the recruiters are all over this 6'9 guy. I'll try to get his name Friday.
Probably Derrick Favors. Heard he's killing people on the defensive end.

I met some AAU kids from Arkansas, they were in their way to a tourney in Orlando. I made a point of telling them I graduated from UT and that our program was blowing up. They all knew Pearl and it struck me that he really has become the face of the program.

Senior Day '05 was a win over UGA. A late-season home game against LSU was a surprise UT blowout with the Vols running the floor like they would the following year under Pearl. I corrected you, because I was at both games and really enjoyed them. I wasn't just being picky.

So now they will all remember you and mention you when they are big stars at UT and being interviewed by ESPN?

Yep, that tends to happen when you go 0-12 from the line. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad he improved but going 0-12 is ridiculous, even for Shaq.

I have no idea why anyone in there right mind would think that losing Duke Crews and Ramar Smith will hurt this team in anyway??????
Ramar Smith was one of the worst point guards in the game.. He could drive, but could not do anything with it when he did. He was out of control most of the time and he had way to many turnovers and he could not really dribble with his left hand. I dont even want to get into his shooting ability or lack of!!!
Duke Crews was horrible around the basket. He had no jumper and he could not "catch a cold" never seen a player miss so many wide open dunks or lose the ball as much as he did.
This hands down is the best class ever been recruited at Tenn. Bruce is building a dynasty for the Vols!!!

Yes, why would anyone believe losing two key players, rising upperclassmen, from arguably the most successful UT team ever would be bad news?

Ramar was such a key for the team that Prince started over him in the tournament at a position he had not played the entire season.

And UT really struggled when Duke was out with his illness last season.

We lost a guard and a post player, both rising Jr.s. Smith played 21 minutes a game, scored 7.4 pts, and added a couple of boards and assists. Crews played 15 minutes, averaged 5 pts and 4 rebounds, and was a post presence. Like them or not, UT would be better off with them than without.

I am not trying to be difficult I just don't agree. Williams should at least be able to pick up where Crews left off.

I fully expect Maze to be much better than Ramar.

Look at the schools they transferred to, nobody wanted any part of these two.

I shall respectfully disagree. You had two players that contributed significantly to an SEC championship squad. Ramar, particularly, was slumping at the end of the season, but both of those guys cold play. And you have ignored the possibility of having Williams and Crews and Ramar and Maze.

I simply cannot see how loosing two guys that played significant minutes is better than keeping them. Would you feel the same way if they had gone down to injury?

It is a mistake to believe that, because they transferred down, they are not SEC caliber players. They both proved that they were while at UT.

No way Maze comes here with Ramar on the team. Maze is a big upgrade over Ramar.

Ramar was in a "slump" the entire season. Neither had a jump shot, Duke could barely catch a pass and both were distractions away from the court.

At minimum Maze will be equal to Ramar and if he isn't better will be a disappointment.

Yes, they would have added depth but neither brought anything to the table that isn't easily replaceable.

Was there any drop off when Crews was out of the lineup?

Hard to measure, but I would go out on a limb and say that having a 6'7" athletic guy who can bang, rebound, and score around the basket available certainly wouldn't have been a bad thing. Don't forget, either, that his numbers were even better as a Freshman, when he was in shape the entire year.

No way Maze comes here with Ramar on the team. Maze is a big upgrade over Ramar.

That is yet to be determined. Ramar, despite not having much of a jumpshot and occasionally getting out of control, was a promising young point guard with a lot of size and a lot of athletic ability. I hope Maze sets the world on fire, but sitting here right now, I'd rather have Jr. Ramar, with another summer to work on his deficiencies, penciled in the line-up than Fr. Maze.
