Best War Movies?

Band of Brothers - nearly perfect series; -1 for casting Schwimmer
Zulu - Epic battle against odds. Awesome ending, Zulu song + R. Burton listing medal winners.
Lawrence of Arabia - great acting and amazing scenery
Das Boot - great movie, but is it OK to cheer for Nazis?
Stalag 17 - Die Peter Graves! Wm. Holden was superb.
Ran - King Lear in Japan

What did it win an Oscar for, sound or cinematography?

Because it certainly didn't win for best picture, actor/actress, supporting actor/actress, screenplay or any other category that actually matters.

One good scene does not make an amazing movie. Sorry.

Not a Schwimmer fan, but when I watched BoB I had recently read the book and I remember the personality of his character being a decent match.

IMO Schwimmers voice was too mellow for a strict diciplinarian psycopath. Face it, he did voice the giraffe in Madagascar :)

which fit perfectly when he came up to that farmer's fence in the British countryside

I've always thought that the choice of Schwimmer was curious, but in the end, it fit. Anybody who was in the military has encountered someone like this, whether they were an officer or an NCO.

A voice that fits for a hypochondriac giraffe in a kid's movie also fits for a psycopathic military officer in a war movie? Schwimmer is not known as an actor of much depth so we'll differ on that...

you're hung up on the cartoon thing, aren't you? You must not have any clue how many actors, talented or not, do cartoon work.

These are some great lists but it sounds to me you just can't appreciate a good love story with awesome battle scenes like Pearl Harbor.

I was a little harsh with my criticism earlier. I apologize. We will just have to agree to disagree over Pearl Harbor.

I loved that movie as a kid and still watch it whenever I'm flipping through the channels and catch it on.

I must be the only person here who has seen "The Blue Max", if you want to see some impressive flight sequences, this movie delivers.

Ha, that's why I noted Schwimmer's lack of depth as an actor. An actor best known for playing a whiny metrosexual in 'Friends' and a hypochondriac giraffe in a cartoon just isn't the best choice for Sobel in BoB.

I'll agree with you there. Always liked aviation movies and Blue Max is one of the better ones.

Willi von Klugermann: By the way, Stachel... there's an impression around that... you care more about your unconfirmed kill than you do about Fabian's death.
[long pause]
Bruno Stachel: Perhaps it's force of habit. In the trenches, we couldn't even bury the dead; there were too many of them. I've never had the time... to discuss them over a glass of champagne.
