Best Whiskey

Just bought the Dickel rye ... fixin to try it after supper.

Edit: I like the Dickel about equally to my standard Jim Beam Rye. The JB might be a bit non-smooth (harsh?) but it is a bit sweet or vanilla-ish. The Dickel does not say sweet to me, maybe a bit sting-y or peppery, but close to the JB, and if they are about same price, I'll go with the made in Tennessee Dickel. And if it's really made in China, don't tell me. :hi:

It's not made in China. It's distilled and bottled in Indiana by the same company that makes Bulleit.

Essentially, Dickel Rye is just a marketing gimmick.

I tried some and I wasn't a huge fan. Between the two I'd stick with Jim Beam Rye. JMO

It was unique though. I think the charcoal filtering gives it a very interesting taste. Would be better in cocktails than it is straight up.

Golfballs, thanks for the info! Made in Indiana ... maybe not China, but also not Tennessee, so, I'll probably leave it and go back to my JB, and/or try the real Bulleit. Thanks.

Not necessarily just whisley related but...

There I was in the liquor store just browsing around when my frustration fueled this thought. There are so many different liquors and different brands I'd like to try without having to purchase an entire bottle before doing so. Is there really a place to do this? Not really, at least not that I know of. Most of the bars out there don't have half the selection of liquors that a liquor store does, in fact most carry your typical run of the mill popular liquors. Why not have a bar that offers tastes of all different kinds of liquors? It doesn't have to be a whole shot even. Charge some nominal fee based on the cost of the liquor by the bottle. I would so go to this place and SPEND money and I'd take home something more than just a buzz.

I guess the biggest problem would be how would you stock the place with such a large selection and still make money. Membership? I don't know.

I realize this idea is basically a liquor store where you could buy samples but sadly the airplane bottle selection at a liquore store never really has the good stuff.

Look what you guys have done to me ... I was fine with crappy JB rye cause I didn't know any better, but now I realize how much smoother Buffalo Trace is ... and I know there is even better stuff out there. Ignorance is bliss, I reckon.

That's because Buffalo Trace isn't rye whiskey

Yeah, I fully know that, but I never did like cheaper bourbons or other sour mashes, so started drinkin rye cause it was different, then discovered that some bourbons were not nasty but actually smooth ... and preferable to my cheaper rye.

For me:

cheaper bourbon inferior to cheaper rye inferior to better bourbon.

A question: who has history with/opinions about I.W. Harper bourbon?

Some say it can still be obtained in Japan, though others say it's not the original recipe.

Some say Old Charter is similar.

Some say Woodford Reserve is similar?

If one is curious about IWH, what should one do?
