Better band: Allman Brothers or Lynryd Skynyrd?

Lynyrd Skynyrd was a well rehearsed act. Their triple guitar riffs were honed by practice, practice, practice. There wasn't a spontaneous lick in any of their shows. They were driven to provide attendees the same quality performance as their recordings. More than their contemporaries, Skynyrd was a business venture.

Your post reads as if you're putting a negative connotation on this fact. I don't see how this approach to performing makes them any less talented musicians. It's just a certain philosophy they had. They weren't the only band with the idea that to play a successful show was to sound as close to the records live as possible. That doesn't mean they didn't possess the capability to be spontaneous. It's just a different approach. I don't think one is necessarily better than the other. Personally I've always appreciated bands who could replicate their songs live to how they sound on record.

Someone mention seeing ABB and the crowd became a bit bored with the long jams. I would venture that crowd was stocked with millennials and short attention spans.

Let's not forgot one of my favorite southern bands. I was fortunate to see these guys several times in their heyday, they poured their heart into every show.

Here's another ban I've always enjoyed,

A great documentary about guitar playing is It Might Get Loud, it had Jack White, JImmy Page and (unfortunately) the Edge sitting around talking about playing and a good history of each. I fast forward through the U2 crap but the rest is awesome. Its really cool how they sit in a circle and talk about riffs and jam together.

We can at least all agree Nickleback is the worst, right? :)

I never understood all of the hate for Nickleback. I mean, I don't really care for them, but it seems like it's damn near unanimous they are the worst band ever, and I just don't see it.

On the thread question. Having to choose which one is "better" is kinda like trying to decide which of my parents were better parents. Both had their unique qualities that made them who they were and I liked both for some different reasons, and for some of the same.

I liked'em both.

No negative spin on my account. You chose to read it that way. The mote is in your own eye.

Ill tangent off the comparison and say this: IMO, Duane Allman was the greatest guitarist of all time. Better than Hendrix, better than Clapton and yes better than Page(who I believe is #2.) Flame away.

Greatest guitarist you say?

Yeah, I think they should have specified ROCK guitarists.

And it's completely subjective at a certain point.
