Better band: Allman Brothers or Lynryd Skynyrd?

I'm glad this thread got a bump because I thought about another major distinction. ABB never had anything approaching a Freebird. When you have a song that is widely regarded as one of the top 2 or 3 all time rock anthyms it puts you on a different level.

Maybe they don't have a song that has been played into the ground but LS also never had a Live at The Filmore which is considered one of the top 2 or 3 all time rock concert albums.

Freebird is probably outside my 20 favorite Skynyrd tunes.

Dude I went to high school with died of lung cancer our senior year in 1983. They played his favorite song, Freebird at the funeral. Brings back good and bad memories when I hear it.

In the early years Lynyrd Skynyrd would dedicate Freebird to Duane Allman as well as Berry Oakley in concert.
Ronnie was very aware of the forefathers of the Southern Sound, even though Gregg Allman did not care for the Southern Rock tag his band became know for.
I recall reading a story about Al Kooper, after hearing Freebird the first time stated, " these boys have their Whipping Post"

The Marshall Tucker Band had as much influence on the Southern Rock sound as anybody.

While The Allman Bros Band were probably better musicians, I simply enjoy Skynnyrd's catalogue more overall. Their songs were just catchier and had much better hooks. Mad respect for both though.

The LABB is one of my top 5 all time. Skynard isn’t but I have a growing appreciation for them and they continue to move up the older I get. Ronnie was a master of lyric and they continued to craft hit songs, which is no easy feat.
It’s impossible to predict what would have happened but they were thriving when the plane crash occureed. Steve Gaines brought a new energy. You got that Right was a great indication of where they were heading.

Yes. Steve Gaines was a very talented guy. They all were really, but as you said, he brought a new energy to the band and I think would have bumped them to the next level if all had played out.

I am a huge fan of both but just my personal tastes have Skynyrd ranked ahead.

So, we have it. Both bands are iconic and bring their own unique flavor to southern rock. Both deserve equal respect and appreciation for their contributions.

I've got to go with Lynryd Skynyrd.

If someone asked me to quick name 5 songs from AB & LS I could easily name 5 Skynyrd songs but for AB after I get past "Ramblin Man" & "Midnight Rider" I couldn't tell you.

That’s because you are an uncultured rube.
