Better Call Saul

I liked season one but it's nowhere near as good as the other AMC shows I like.
The Jimmy stuff is just like any old court-drama. The Mike stuff is what I find riveting.

I thought the finale was eh. Certainly not the best episode of the season. It's not everyday you get an opportunity to interview for partnership in a law firm. I don't know why he turned the other way.

My guess is that he felt like if his own brother didn't think he was a real lawyer, then odds are that the guys at the new firm would probably not show him much respect either. Combine that with the fact that he had been trying to do the right things and just kept getting kicked in the teeth, and it at least makes a little sense as to why he would say "f*** it! I'm going rogue!" He also had the epiphany while walking in where he looked at the ring that he got from Marco and realized that what he is really good at is being a sheister.

Here's what I am thinking:

After the betrayal of his brother Saul returned home to be the person his brother would never let him forget. Jimmy went back home to "get it out of his system" but when his friend died I think he had an epiphany: I am Saul Goodman, that's who I am; I am not Jimmy. He returns to NM because he cares for his clients, and no matter how dirty Saul may be one thing you can't say is that he doesn't love his clients. He gets the offer to join the law firm and he convinces himself that he may be accepted. He still cares for his brother, evident in him waiting outside the house with the HHM caretaker. After returning to the court, however, he realizes that no matter how hard he tries he will always fall short of his brother's expectations. I think that's why he considered the law firm job in the first place: to gain some kind of respect from his brother. Ultimately, however, Jimmy at the end of the episode finds the truth he has been looking for the entire season: he is Saul Goodman, maybe not in name but Saul is who he is, and ultimately it's the pinky ring that reminds him of who is real brother was.

I thought the episode was fantastic because it tied together many BB themes.

1.) The discussion of O'Keefe in the bingo game---a museum that Jesse and his heroin girl went to visit.

2.) Kevin Costner: In the next to last season Saul is talking to Walt about buying a laser tag business and he says: "You convince anyone of anything as long as you believe it yourself. I convinced a woman that I was Kevin Costner one time just to get her into bed." We actually see this story play out in this episode.

3.) We finally found out what a Chicago surprise was!!!!

My take on it was that by acknowledging the ring in that scene, Jimmy was showing they he learned a lesson from his friend's death. Right before their last scam his friend said this had been the best week of his life and that he hated his job.

I think Jimmy realized that he was pretty miserable with his day to day life of being a traditional lawyer and didn't want to waste his life away doing something he hated like his friend had.

Awesome, BCS got the nominated for Best Drama, Odenkirk for Best Lead Actor, and Jonathon Banks Best Supporting Actor at the 2015 Emmys.
