Bigger bust? Ryan Leaf or Jamarcus Russell?

I remember, or at least I believe I remember, reading a SI article years ago after the draft asking the same question about Leaf or Manning, the writer voted Manning :)

Leaf. I still bet that the Colts get down on their hands and knees every day and thank god that they didn't choose him over Peyton. Though I am sure that behind closed doors there really wasn't much debate.

Russell.

At least Leaf tried.

Russell was given 50 million and he was a fat pig. How can you possibly be that fat when you're paid to be a professional athlete? You have all the time in the world to work out. In fact, it's part of your job. The fat pig just sat on the couch and didn't care.

More like 39 million, but after so many millions, who's counting? :)

Russell won the lottery. If I suddenly (and legally) came into $39 million, I probably wouldn't be to motivated to show up at work, either.

Just another case for the Rookie salary cap in the NFL.

And it is likely that he will be broke in a few years.

Russell is the biggest bust by about 100 lbs.

I will say that Leaf was a bigger failure expectations wise.

But the fact that he tried and Russell just ballooned into a pig without trying makes me think Russell is the bigger bust. I'll take a guy that tries and fails over a guy who doesn't and fails. I'm pretty sure Russell never cared once he got that fat check. Didn't he hold out too?

The fact that he held out to get more money and then ate himself out of the league is b.s. I'd take Leaf over him any day of the week. Russell may have 39 million, but as a human being, he is a loser.

So you're saying Russell put up better numbers than Leaf without even trying?

I also don't remember him skipping mandatory meetings, cussing out reporters, faking injuries to go play golf, blaming teammates for everything, etc.

Ryan Leaf retired after literally 4 years...if anyone took their check and ran, it was him.

And you're clearly having trouble remembering how much Leaf really "tried."

Ryan Leaf didn't get 39 million and Ryan Leaf didn't weigh more than his lineman.

Russell is the bigger bum and you won't change my mind.

Edit: Not to mention, Russell doing drugs is worse than a guy playing golf. I'll take fake injuries over some fatso with an injured brain.

Oh and another thing to add... you say Russell putting up better numbers makes him better?

Can you even name a single player that was on the Chargers offense besides Leaf? I'm pretty sure the Raiders gave Russell a 50 million dollar wide receiver and a 60 million dollar tackle.

On the field, Russell was better.

In the locker room, Russell was better.

Judge whatever else you want, but those things are facts.

Russell was a drug addict.

Russell didn't work out and ate a crap load of food.

Russell was given more money.

Russell was surrounded with more talent.

I will judge plenty of other things. I've never seen anyone do so little for 39 million aside from winning the lottery or having a rich family member die.
