Bigger than we realize to get Vic

Lewisburg is not the Jackson area, ftr. Willis didn't "get away". We got Daniel Brooks and Chris Donald. See how that works?

Did we let Chad Pennington and Randall Cobb get away? Prolly not.

Pennington was 6 feet tall and weighed 160 when he graduated from HS. He would not have strted over T. He got no major offers. That's like people grumbling that they didn't offer David Robinson when he came out os HS at 6'4. Nobody could have imagined that he would become 6'11. Heck even Navy had to make a special exemption for him because the Academy does not allow anyone over 6"6.

UT shouldn't have to compete with Vanderbilt for recruits. Sad.

This way of thinking is contributing to the ignorance of our fanbase.

Vandy has a quality coach. Vandy can compete. You can't throw the power T on and beat asses at will.

UT stopped working. UT thinks that history and tradition mean something other than good memories.

Stop being stupid. UT has to earn back those thoughts. We don't scare ANY school. None.

How hard is that to understand?

UT needs to not get blown out by Vandy for your statement to become relevant. And maybe winning more games than Vandy would be required. Hell, Vandy has 7 SEC wins in the past 2 years..UT has 2.....

Oh got to love the so called Vol fans throwing out negative comments without context.:ermm: People see these type of negative comments and don't know better. Smh.

In years past Auburn used to get all the BA players. I dont think UT can survive with instate talent alone, but it could do a lot worse, and has recently.

I agree...Tennessee must have out of state players. As least 50% of the starters need to come from out-of-state. The number is actually probably more like 70-80%. But we do need some level of in-state talent at UT.

Some you are beyond ignorant. You turds do realize this isn't your daddy's Vandy anymore right? I mean, they did beat the brakes off of us this year, and are on their way to 9 victories and a top 25 class.

Uh Vandy beat what was without a doubt the worse UT team since moby dick was a minnow...Seriously, Vandy is still Vandy, they have a good coach now but there is never an excuse for losing to them....Ever

Its neither ignorant, nor stupid. It's an observation. Hey, I think this is a great commit, FWIW. It's just sad to see how the ranks have changed. That was my point. Some of you guys need to lighten up.

Disagree. Tennessee needs a lot of kids who grew up dreaming of wearing the T on their helmet. College football isn't the NFL. Talent is certainly important (very important), but the college game is much more a game of emotion and momentum. I think too often lately, we have collapsed late in games because the Tennessee platers weren't invested in Tennessee, and they weren't surrounded by enough teammates who were invested in Tennessee. For every Cordarelle Patterson we need a Zack Rogers, or an Eric Berry. Guys who have talent AND a passion for UT.

And national recruiting is no longer limited to Tennessee. I think of Georgia, Matt Stafford was from Texas. Look at Alabama, Donte Hightower was from Tennessee. Yes, it's good to recruit the best players wherever they are, but Tennessee needs Tennessee kids too.

Also I don't get the hate towards recruiting Memphis. For starters, Memphis comprises about 20% of the population of the State of Tennessee. Second, why would it be considered prohibitively expensive to recruit Memphis? Couldn't the same coach recruit Memphis and Jackson? If you are going to recruit Florida (10+ hours away) then why would you NOT focus on Memphis which is 5.5 hours away, and, oh yeah, actually in the state of Tennessee?

You're living in the "what was" and ignoring the "what is". Vandy is a legit program on the rise with a good young coach and a great academic institution behind it.

we don't need Memphis for football. We just don't. I know someone will list a bunch of players, but we don't need Memphis hs football recruits. From Jackson over is fine. Basketball, is fine. I think our time and money would be better invested into areas within a 3-4 hr radius, and we would get better ball players. jmo, of course
A terrible opinion...

Listen to this guy..He's right. With our facilities and $ we throw at football, it shouldn't even be close. If you disagree you don't know crap about UT's football program. I am not as excited about vic as most of you. He is 3star on some and 4star on some. To me he is same type of player we been getting for the past 7 years. If we start getting instate talent like Corn Elder or Jalen Hurd or Ramsey, that is something to be excited about, not a vic wharton. And yes times have changed, we have gotten a lot worse. Vandy has stayed about the same, besides beating the orange off us

This isn't about Vandy. Vic Wharton is a terrific athlete. His father is a coach. Brandon Wharton, former excellent UT point guard, is a relative. This was an very good pick up. He attended Knox Catholic as a freshman and was easily the best player on the field most Fridays.

Have you looked at Vandy's schedule last season and even the 2013 season? 2013 will be a good season for Vandy but 2014, they get a much harder schedule. No more Auburn or Ole Miss. They will play LSU and Bama or A & M.

Depends on what period of history. Remember that Neyland was hired to beat Vandy and did. i have seen some really good games between Tennessee and Vandy back in the 40s an 50s. The recent history reflects the fact that Vandy can enroll student-athletes that can not be enrolled by Tennessee.

:lolabove: You really believe our academic standards are now higher than Vandy's? You have been half way reading things on here taking them out of context.

Believe this was stated earlier, but he was being recruited by Cincy before Butch got here, so it isn't like he came in and established a relationship in a couple of days. That said not sure of his other options but I would take a down UT in the SEC over a good Big East team any day. (Well not for long since the Big East is going bye bye).

PS - Franklin has done a great job at Vandy, should've won two in a row against us. I think the video that leaked from the locker room in 11' says it all about the state of our program and where theirs is headed.

What's your point, have you seen UT's 2013 schedule, will be lucky to win 5 or 6 games including Vandy.

I really don't believe this. We had a much more talented team.

Well believe it. They wanted it more, were better coached , and in many postions did have better or even talent.

There is no the distance there once was in UT and Vandy like it or not.
