Bill Snyder/Phil Fulmer comparison

What was the reason because he didn't win the big game?

If you feel that way using the same standards do you think Richt should be fired?

Both lost their last 3 appearances in the SECCG.

Both men have similar records their last 7 years.

I use Richt as a comparison because Richt is in a similar position a Fulmer was the year before he was let go.

I don't want to get into an argument it's just a question.

A lot of UGA fans say that Richt should go.

Ok, let's just presume everyone on here is right and Phil needs to come back (let me stifle my laughter on that). You are telling me that the Jim Haslam is going to say "I was wrong Phil come on back" (something that Brent Hubbs said would never happen) and let Phil back in. Then, once he comes back he's going to sell 18 year old kids on a championship he won in 1998 (about 14 years) and he's going to pick up on the lackadaisical recruiting that more or less sealed his fate and put us in the position we are in now. The answers I hear are "he's loyal" and "he's one of the all-time winning college football coaches" and that's going to get us back to national relevance? I respect Fulmer--he was great at the time for us...but folks he ain't coming back. It's not going to happen and any kind of hope for that is about as wishful thinking as Gruden. I'm actually glad because it forces everyone in this fan base to get over Fulmer and move on. Once someone does get here and start winning all that will probably die down. I don't even think Phil would want to come back....and thankfully it's never been seriously entertained at all. OH yeah, and that loyalty thing is BS-----for the simple fact that you never heard any program in the country express any kind of desire for Fulmer...AT ALL.

So you think Fulmer's Championship ring from 14 years ago carries less weight than Fishers, Gundy's, Strong's, Golden's? Oh wait, they don't even have a ring! Case closed.

I think a championship 14 years ago doesn't carry as much weight in the year 2012..Yes...when you are trying to recruit kids that were born this decade..emphatically yes.

I'm sure Notre Dame got Manti Teo by promoting their championship in 1988 .. These kids from out of state that have no ties to Tennessee couldn't care less that we won a championship when they were 3 or 4 years old. That's ancient history to them.

I will disagree with the recruiting part. I belive he would connect with the kids and their families. I have heard Petrinos name brought up by the fans and some how they say he will do fine. I can see Petrino talking to a single mother now. If anyone thinks that Fulmer would not do a better job than Petrino, well I don't have any advise for you seek help my friend.

In 2007 Fulmer had the #5 recruiting class. I do not blame their bust on Fulmer because he only had them for a year and the year he had them was one of the more drama filled seasons. Those kids came into a mess and that I blame on the AD. After all the BS going on behind the scene the power struggle of who has control of what. The changes that came with the university deciding it wanted to be a top 25 academic school. It was bad.

Most of it started way before 2008 and we could see it, but we had no clue to what was going on. Now those issues are being addressed. Hart spoke of them in his last presser.

Now I will tell everyone I was never for letting Fulmer go. I thought it was ignorant then and still keep the same opinion. I have set back and watched and seen nothing but one cluster f*** after another and that's a fact. No matter who you blame be it Fulmer, Hamilton, or whoever else. The fact is now we can not afford to f*** this up period.

Also everyone who talked about Fulmers buyout do you realize we are still paying Hamilton, Pearl and Raleigh.

So you don't think a coach that goes into a kids living room with a National Championship ring carries any more weight than one that doesn't? I think you're wrong. There have only been 8 other college teams that have won a championship since UT did.. Think about it before you comment:)

Also remember, Fulmer had Taj Boyd before Kiffin told him he didn't fit his system. Boyd just got player of the year in the ACC

Well in 2006 we were 23rd in recruting on rivals... that leaves at the least 15 teams that were ahead of us in recruiting that didn't have a ring since us. Cal, Pitt, and Arizona finished ahead of us. They haven't even sniffed a National Championship since us.

Yep. And won the SEC East in 2007. Sure would be nice to sat that again, huh?

So, once again, you are expecting kids that were born outside of this region (and we've established that Tennessee can't simply recruit the southeast--to succeed we must recruit the entire country with a large focus on the southeast) in the last decade to care about a championship that was won in 1998 (a year that they were in diapers) and come because our coach is "loyal" and he is from the state? I think that is wrong...and once again I preface everything I say with respect to Fulmer--respect to all the great Vol coaches and players...but that makes zero sense and isn't based on anything but fanaticism.

I never said we should hire Fulmer because he is "loyal and from our state". I think we should hire him because he is more qualified then any of the other candidates we are considering from what I have seen. Don't see any rings on any of them

OK, so let's say we hire him. What are the expectations (taking into account where we are now as a program)?

I guarantee he would be competing for SEC East championships within 3 years. Possibly even 2 years. Had he been the HC this year, he would have won at least 8 games ( without Sunseri at DC)

yep, I believe he would do fine. He has always been known for his recruiting. Al Wilson, Manning, Berry ... should I continue.

So we just ignore the latter stages of Fulmer and the huge duds he laid recruiting class wise and figure he goes back to recruiting on par with his early days?

I'm sorry but I'm going to have to respectfully disagree.

Florida State handled Bowden better that we did Fulmer, and I tend to believe that what happened to him is the way we should have gone. It wasn't perfect, but we probably should have done the HCIW thing...and ushered Phil out gracefully. I do disagree with Hamilton and his handling of the whole affair--but I just don't think that Phil Fulmer would be recruiting on par with Saban and Miles and winning...I just don't think that is an accurate statement on a lot of levels.

How do you think kids will react if Peyton steps up and says " I love coach Phillip Fulmer. He was my college coach and I loved playing for him."

If they don't remember like you say they will love it. Nothing like an endorsement from the best NFL QB.

Considering Phil's career you think 8 wins would be good enough to keep him here considering where we was early on in his tenure?

No problem. Bottom line, I know this isn't going to happen unless we get turned down by several candidates, because of the divisiveness it would cause. However, I think Fulmer is the 2nd best coach in UT history ( Neyland #1)
