Bill Snyder/Phil Fulmer comparison

How do you think kids will react if Peyton steps up and says " I love coach Phillip Fulmer. He was my college coach and I loved playing for him."

If they don't remember like you say they will love it. Nothing like an endorsement from the best NFL QB.

I can't disagree with that but I think for me the bottom line is that Tennessee isn't putting too many of those Peyton Manning players in the NFL anymore. We just aren't as nationally relevant as we used to be and I don't think Phil reclaiming his glory years is going to help that...I just don't.

I see light at the end of the tunnel. It is bright with a hue of Orange. For all the people mad at who DH will hire, sorry. Anyone is better than that liar Kiffin or the loser Dooley. I can not wait til next year. Hope for the best, pray for better. VFL

Florida State handled Bowden better that we did Fulmer, and I tend to believe that what happened to him is the way we should have gone. It wasn't perfect, but we probably should have done the HCIW thing...and ushered Phil out gracefully. I do disagree with Hamilton and his handling of the whole affair--but I just don't think that Phil Fulmer would be recruiting on par with Saban and Miles and winning...I just don't think that is an accurate statement on a lot of levels.

I don't think it was right to get rid of him at all .

In 2007 before the SECCG we were ranked #12. We lost to LSU by a touchdown. LSU went on and finished #2 in the BCS.

2001 1st in east
2003 tied for 1st in the east
2004 1st in east
2007 1st in east

By stating it was right to fire Fulmer then Georgia fans should fire Richt today. See how ignorant that sounds.

So you think losing to Wyoming wasn't the lowest point in his tenure and worthy of being fired? A 5-7 year for one year is not worthy of being fired considering where he used to be record wise?

We need some caliber players (like we had in the 80's & 90's) along with coaches we had in the 80's/90's. I think to appease most Vol fans, we need to win a minimum of 9 games a season to keep most people happy and win an SEC Championship half of the time over a 10 year period.

Considering Phil's career you think 8 wins would be good enough to keep him here considering where we was early on in his tenure?

8 wins would be a minimum, with ocassional 9 wins or better. 8 wins would be considered mediocre to some people. Once the Vols fans got used to winning 9 games or better and being top 10 finishes and going to a top bowl they were happy. UT needs to get back to beating the Gators, UGA and Bama every so often plus LSU & Arkansas when we play them. Could being playing Texas A&M before long. The Aggies are a tough team currently.

Blame the Wyoming loss on Hamilton. He had just fired Fulmer the week of that game and the players were still in shock. Fulmers players liked playing for him and after Hamilton fired him (idiot move #1) they threw in the towel.

Not worthy of firing him. Was it embarrassing yes.
He had 2 losing seasons in 16 years. You have to be realistic every program has it's ups and downs. Hell even the great Neyland had some bad years. He won the conference title in 1946 then:
1947 5-5
1948 4-4-2
1949 7-2-1

then what happened in 1950? Back to Back NC's 50' and 51'. I've heard people were protesting on Gay St. to get rid of him during those years bad years.

Bear Bryant had bad years.

1967 8-2-1
1968 8-3
1969 6-5
1970 6-5-1

They were yelling for Bryants head during that time.
Then from 71 to 79 he won the SEC every year except 76'. And won 3 NC's.

All great coaches have ruff times, but what makes them great is that they will adjust and find a way to win. Fulmer only had 2 loosing seasons in 16 years and never back to back.

How are you so sure CHavis would come back?

He has a much better job at UT than here?

He is a UT alum, loves the program, and unlike the younger fans that think NCAA football started in 2008 is aware of our tradition and history.

I can respect that. I don't agree, but I respect it :good!:

Both Peach Bowls, especially the second one, made alot of people including the boosters extremely mad! Last 10 years he went to what, eight bowls? Won the 01 bowl after the dismal and bitter loss to LSU in the SECCG and again in 07? Did he win only one more in that span? Maybe 04 season?

Fulmer had great coordinators he was never really an Xs and Os guy himself. His best characteristic is that he could make the kids feel like family and that's why so many talented guys came here. But toward the end he started focusing more on living life and enjoying it, and I can't blame him, but that was the start of the end. He stopped recruiting as hard and college recruiting never stops.

Just curious, but wasn't he a successful OC for us before getting head gig?

The great thing is that aside from the past I think it can be changed with a solid hire--and I'm anticipating that will happen.

I think our offense will be alright. It's the defense I'm worried about. If we can get some quick success in the defense dept. and keep what offense we have we will be fine. The part that worries me is the wrong hire and it will take us 10 years to get back on track. It will just get harder and harder to get the recruits and without the talent we can't win.

That's why I want Fulmer. I just don't trust anyone else at this point. Unless they are a proven home run hire. If that's the case, I'm in. But that list is very short. It feels kinda like picking out a new baby sitter lol. I won't leave my son with just anyone and I have to really trust them.
I feel the same way about my Vols.

Were not getting Fulmer, Thats just Vicky's friends hoping for a miracle.

I could be wrong so correct me if necessary it has been 14 years ago (too long!!) but wasn't it Vicky that told Phil after winning the NC in 1998 he might as well retire the next day because he couldn't go no where but down.

She said after he was fired, that he talked to her about retiring after the NC game and she also said after he was fired she wished he would have. I do to! Both for his legacy and our program.

Thanks, I knew it was something like that.

He was getting consistently owned by the upper tier of the SEC towards the end of his tenure.

Saban, Miles, Meyer, and Spurrier all had his number.

It's true that Meyer had his number. Saban had only been in the league a couple years. Spurrier? Get out...Phil had a winning record against Spurrier at USCe.

Snyder's first 2 seasons back at KSU: 6-6 and 7-6.

Bring Fulmer back and have him do that his first 2 seasons and see how that works out.

If UGA lets Richt go, Hart needs to be all over him. I'd take him in a second over most of the names everyone is throwing out there.

He's something like 1-12 against top competition in his last 5 years.

No thanks. He's a loser. Didn't you just see him choke up a hairball in the SECCG?

That loss was entirely on him.

Chavis is the lowest paid DC in the SEC at LSU. He would make nearly 900K at UT as opposed to 500K at LSU.

My sources.......Sal makes 900k. I know, right?

As for Phil, I'd have him back. Never shoulda fired him. Tee, well, he's a WR coach at USC. Not sure about him being OC. But I'd have him as a QB/WR coach, and recruiter.
