You are wrong; there were some Chattanooga folks who were upset thst BJ left but I don't believe the majority was that way. The fued was started by all those who constantly referred to him as a quitter and if anyone argued he wasn't a quitter, the hounds started barking. What media do you work with--radio? Print?
Have worked with both.
I don't hold it against BJ as a person. I personally think he's a great fit for UTC, and could've been a successful quarterback at a midlevel D1 program, like Marty Lowe at Louisville.
He just wasn't the right fit for Kiffin's offense. Both Crompton and Stephens have cannons and put a ton of velocity on their throws, and from what I've seen, Bray does the same.
BJ is more of a finesse thrower. That's not to say he has a weak arm, because he can throw the ball down the field, but he doesn't have the zip on his passes that the others do, which is what I personally think Kiffin likes in a qb.
The reason people got so ticked about BJ was the whole "Big Dog" comments when referring to Kiffin in the interview which came out at the same time as his announcement.
Then there was the whole whisper rumor that Kiffin might've said some naughty words. Then there was the whole "Kiffin missed a meeting." Then he stated that he was getting the shaft because Kiffin didn't want anyone but one of his recruits to be quarterback, which started the whole "Crompton is only playing to bring in a recruit" which is horse crap. Kiffin could've brought in just about anyone and none of them would've likely started over JC this year. After things started coming together and the new offense started clicking, JC has given us the best opportunity to win football games. He has played well under pressure, and even put us in a position to beat Bama if the kicker could've made a field goal.
I understand the kid wanting to play. At the same time, he would likely be the guy next year if he had stuck around, or at worst, he would've been competing with Nick Stephens.
Crompton was a much more "highly decorated" prospect out of high school. If Cutcliffe hadn't come back, he may have had the opportunity to beat Ainge out after what was arguably the worst season by a UT qb in history in 2005. He played as well as could be expected against 2 top 10 teams as a RS freshman, and then was told by Cutcliffe that he would never be an SEC quarterback. He could've transferred just about anywhere, at that point.
Cutcliffe leaves, giving Crompton his 3rd coordinator in 4 years, struggles his jr year, but never once were there any rumors that were taken seriously that he was planning on transferring because of pt. Even when Cutcliffe seemed to favor Coleman over him, or Clawful stated that BJ should be named the starting qb over him.
In comparison, BJ was upset that he wasn't going to start as a sophomore. For all his negatives, nobody (other than those who thought Crompton was evil) ever questioned his work ethic and his leadership skills.
