This will give us some room since Eric Berry is going to pay Jordan Gainey's tuition.

Barnes and his staff get paid the big bucks to make hard decisions. UT has yet to have a transfer under Barnes really pan out IMO. Pushing out Edwards, who showed some promise in limited time as a true freshman, for Gainey and Co. seems like a risky move to me, particularly with the transfer struggles to date. I guess we shall see how it goes.

Uhhh, he didn’t play enough this year to show anything. That’s just criticizing for the sake of it.

Well you know how it goes, he’ll go somewhere else with a chip on his shoulder and WILL become an All-American (even if it’s at a different division) and those whiners will really come out of the woodwork then! Ha! Ha!
I’m not 100% sure but I don’t think any of the kids who have transferred out of Tennessee has had an all American run. Maybe an all conference (kid at Nebraska, and Pember). Am I forgetting someone?

DJ Burns was All-Conference in the Big South at Winthrop, conference player of the year. He had previously been honorable mention All Conference, and he was again honorable mention All Conference in the ACC this year.

Nothing is certain. I don’t think that stars are assigned based on potential. Coaches try to evaluate how much upside there might be as well as their teenage accomplishments. A 4 or 5 star might have simply matured early and won’t get much better while, especially in football, 2 or 3 stars might have a ton of upside.

If Barnes doesn’t give local 4 or 5 stars a fair shot then the critics go ballistic. If they matured early and peak young then the tired narrative is that the coaches failed to develop that player.

BJ Edwards had his shot. More important than the 4 minutes per game he played is what he’d displayed in practice. He’s just not ready to make a big splash at a top level, P-6 program yet.

I would rather keep and develop BJ Edwards then waste a spot for Jordan Gainey. No offense to the kid but I seriously doubt he will ever be a SEC level player.

Let’s see where BJ ends up, and how he does compared to Gainey before making these kinds of statements. The staff loved and wanted Gainey, to the point that his father wasn’t involved in his recruitment it was Barnes and the other 2 assistants because they wanted to make it clear to him that they didn’t want him because of who his dad was but who he was as a player.

IMO Edwards has shown he’s unlikely to be able to play PG at tgif level, likely meaning his best spot is as a 2 guard or combo, and his 3pt shooting will be a huge question as to how how does there. With Gainey you’ve already got a 2 guard who’s shorn to be one of the better 3pt shooters in the country the last 2 years…none of us are Nostradamus and have all been wrong, but I can see why they liked Gainey > Edwards.

I love it when people criticize Banes for an unproven player that is having to leave due to too many players being on the roster.

A. BJ Edwards didn't show anything at Tennessee
B. Bj Edwards couldn't even get on the court when ZZ went down, that says a lot.
C. Barnes is a lot smarter than you in a basketball sense

The flipside is that Barnes and staff have also yet to have a kid transfer out who's made big waves at the high-major level, so it sounds to me like they've done a decent job of assessing talent and projection once these kids make it to campus. Drew Pember is the only one we can look back and think what might have been, but his success has entirely been on the lower end of the MM level. And even he didn't attempt to transfer out of UNCA, this year, to prove himself on the HM level, again, so maybe he knows where his bread is buttered.

But you're that much more confident that Edwards would become an SEC level player? Based on what? At worst, that seems like it may be most likely an even trade in terms of risk. Gainey has at least proven to have one very high-level skill. Edwards has shown nothing.

I’m going to defer to Coach Barnes and his expertise on this one, hard for me to reconcile giving up a young local product for any transfer from a lower major.

I trust CRB, but this can be a dangerous game to play because of how the transfer portal can affect high school recruiting. What if Grant, Admiral, Bone or any other player he’s developed transferred because of bringing in transfers?

In no scenario would CRB push out Grant, Bone, or Admiral (especially once he adjusted his attitude)

I think he may get a look from Wake Forest since Coach Forbes has ties to Johnson City and BJ has family in Johnson City. Just a guess but he lost guards Appleby and Davion Williamson who he brought with him from ETSU and Forbes works hard at the transfers even before NIL. Will be interesting where he lands.

He didn’t show promise. He’s not a good shooter and he’s not a PG.
