Bj Edwards in the portal? [confirmed]

I’ve gotten a bunch of BJ Edwards showed no promise, I hate Barnes, etc., responses. Edwards played some as a true freshman. To be sure, Mashack ended up running more point than Edwards after ZZ went down. But just keep in mind that Mashack showed very little other than athleticism as a true freshman (I’d argue he looked worse than Edwards) and see how Mashack improved this year. Just because a true freshman doesn’t tear it up doesn’t mean he’s a bust. I wasn’t truly criticizing Barnes either as I think he’s brought UT to its highest levels in program history (tournament performances still disappoint). I was merely commenting that our transfers so far have underwhelmed and so having a true freshman leave to bring in transfers seems like a risky proposition to me when freshman generally improve the most between freshman and sophomore years. But Barnes knows more about basketball and his team than I do and he made the calculation here. We shall see if it was the right call.

In no scenario would CRB push out Grant, Bone, or Admiral (especially once he adjusted his attitude)

Fair enough, all three did play major minutes as frosh, but BJ would’ve played major minutes on the team those 3 played on as freshmen - definitely not the caliber and depth of the 2022-2023 Vols.

My point is that I hope we’re not forsaking recruiting and development for older transfers that haven’t proven they’re capable of an SEC grind.

Again, I have complete trust in Coach Barnes, so I’ll defer to him - not that anyone asked!

I am certainly not one that writes off a young player after his freshman year because most kids just need time to develop. But your original post said that Edwards showed promise this year. He played 60 total minutes all year and sparingly in just 7 SEC games. Not saying he can’t develop, but there was nothing that I saw that suggested that he necessarily “showed promise.” It’s been stated that Dilione has been playing PG for the scout team, so that means Edwards’ contributions need to be in other areas, and I’m not sure he was brought in for that.

I think it was pretty clear that Mashak’s athleticism was really good, and you can’t teach those qualities. With Mashak’s improvement and the addition of Gainey and Dilione, Edwards was still going to have a tough time finding minutes as a sophomore.

Not trying to be argumentative but what you're saying simply isn't even close to being true...BJ would not have sniffed the floor as a freshman in the 2016-2017 season...here are the other guards on that roster:

Bone, Hubbs, Turner, Phillips, Mostella

He had a very clear path this season when ZZ went down and he got minutes but did not look very good hence Mashack's move to PG.

JJJ is a great dude and a solid teammate.

He's saying exactly what he's supposed to say.

If you read into more than that, I'm not sure what to tell you.
Im reading into it exactly what I believe to be true. Edwards is going to be a really good player somewhere.

Loose handle…. I’m sure he is a fine young man - and do we know that Barnes forced him out or he decided to transfer on his own? I would guess the latter…

Those are all excellent points, my only counter to that is maybe he would’ve seen the floor more than some of those guys because they were young and that was a .500 team.

I’m not a BJ super fan - and all the questions about his potential are valid - but I would prefer building and developing through recruiting, though I absolutely trust CRB and his ability to assemble a roster.

Barnes and his staff get paid the big bucks to make hard decisions. UT has yet to have a transfer under Barnes really pan out IMO. Pushing out Edwards, who showed some promise in limited time as a true freshman, for Gainey and Co. seems like a risky move to me, particularly with the transfer struggles to date. I guess we shall see how it goes.
DJ Burns when he got to Winthrop had a good season after transferring from UT.

Well Hubbs was a SR and Mostella was a JR. For the FR, even with a .500 record, Bone is arguably the 2nd best PG of CRB's tenure here whose quickness and handles were far and away better than BJE at the same point in the careers. Then you have Turner who was a serious shooter from Day 1 on campus which BJE is not at least to this point.

I agree with you on building and developing thru recruiting as our primary strategy...I just think in this case BJE was brought in to be a PG but the coaches obviously feel he doesn't have the skills to do it at this level.

Not attempting to be argumentative because you've made a reasonable point, but Mashack at least showed a translatable skill (his defense) and played more than twice as many minutes as a freshman. What we also don't see as fans is how they develop in practice. I'm guessing, based on how minutes shook out and how Dilione took over scout team PG upon arrival, that Edwards wasn't progressing on the practice court, either, which led to his lack of minutes in games, and ultimately, his transfer.

Yeah I think that’s the most important thing. If Dillone has already replaced him, we can let Santi and Mashack run PG until ZZ returns. It’s the most logical one to exit unfortunately. Hopefully he kills it in next stop.

It doesn't really matter at this point. He will play somewhere else next year, and there is no reason to assume he won't be a good player. Not sure why all these "fans" hate this kid so much.

No reason except for the fact he did absolutely nothing this year other than get whipped off the dribble defensively

It was announced last week Dillione will be the starting PG for us this year even when Z comes back
