Not Newt, but I don't get wall mount.
Most people have at least some equipment that works with their TV. Amp, cable box, DVD player, surge protector, etc. It is nice to have a cabinet directly under or beside the tv to store that equipment, and run wires. I understand that wires seem to be getting less important or necessary for most people. If you care about sound quality that is probably not true.
Most TVs that are wall mounted are too high for me. Often they are over a fireplace. Everytime I visit my sister in Asheville my neck aches for a few hours from looking up at her TV which I am not accustomed to. The best place to locate a TV is about the same level as your eyes while sitting in a chair. So I prefer a TV to be in An area from roughly 30 inches at the bottom to 72 inches at the top.
It is also usually not so easy to make changes when mounted on a wall. Moving the TV to a new location can be a pain and require new wiring and drywall repairs. People do make changes.Wall mount is a last choice for me.
I built a house for a couple who had opposite interest. Like most married couples. She hated his high fi and video stuff, and he had a lot of it. We ended up building a false wall with an equipment room behind it which was about 5 feet deep and 12 feet wide. He had about 10 pieces of electronic equipment including amps, turntable, reel to reel, and DVD, etc. They sat on racks in the hidden equipment area. You primarily saw the TV and large speakers in their entertainment room.
That was about 1997, and things have changes greatly in 20 years. They had a rear projection TV. They wanted bookshelves on either
Side of the TV. As TVs got larger they could not fit one in their original tv area on the wall. Problems!
Technology will continue to change.
It's all about choice. What you want.
