Blaming refs is making excuses

Even in games where we play well and win big, like Miss State, our post players don't get to the free throw line. I don't blame officiating for that. We just don't have anyone down low who commands a double team. Remember that game against Vanderbilt when Grant Williams was like 23-23 from the line? Damn, I miss that guy.

Barnes said yesterday we foul too much and he's told the team we foul too much. So if we aren't fouling shouldn't the man making several millions to coach standup and back his team against bad reffing. Why would he say yesterday we foul too much and he's had that discussion with his players if the refs are screwing us?
Yet we have made more shots than other teams have attempted, Free Throw wise.

I think I heard the commentators say Tn is one of the leading defense teams in the country, so maybe that aggressive defensive is going to get more calls. Sometimes the ref's call the ticky-tack contact and sometimes they let them play.

beat them bad enough and the refs don't matter.

make your easy layups and the refs won't matter.

make more of the 3s you take and the refs won't matter.

don't make excuses when you lose.

UK may have lost a couple of games this year, but they are still UK. You can't go into that game with less intensity than they have and expect to win.
Usually, but a string of incorrect can/will play games with the minds of most players.

UT has to be better than that or they will not go far in March. Hopefully the Vols learn from this loss. I'm sure they will.

Go Vols!

You know coaches get fined for making comments about referees, right?

I agree with the general premise of this thread regarding this game though

Missed calls on both sides, it was evened out. Rebounding and layups did it.

Needed more minutes from Aidoo and Awaka. They are our rebounders. Needed them in there with Plav screening Tsheib and they would have gotten several more rebounds.

25 FTs to our 10 is not “evening” out.

Good lord.

So what you are saying....instead of just saying nothing to get fined he just blames his players for fouling too much instead of just saying nothing? Usually if a coach is upset with officials they just say no comment...Not blame their players for fouling too much....And probably him being a older coach with millions he could care less if he's fined.

Tennessee wasn't sharp against Kentucky, 56 points is not competitive in the SEC,

Warning signs were there in the Vanderbilt game, team raced out to a nice lead, looked like they were going to run Vandy out of the gym, first sub rotation Vandy came right back into the game, got very physical, Vandy actually led at halftime.

Similar pattern in the Kentucky game, 8-0 lead vanished with first substitutions, Vols lost lead in first half, very physical game, took the lead a couple of times in the second half, just poor shot selection at crunch time, missed a lot of short shots, just got beat by a team that had not been playing very well as of late.

We'll play Kentucky again, not sure the result will be any different if Tennessee doesn't look to score in transition, half court offense leaves a lot to be desired against taller talent.

2 point game with under a minute yet “we got our butts handed to us”? Hate to think what it would be if we lost by double digits. Tough crowd in here.

Most of them are dumb or just trolling.

That number isn't indicative of whether the officiating was evenly called. We got away with no calls also. Take off the orange tint glasses. Our players
are known to be more physical, that's why we get many fouls - our scheme playing 10 players allow for us to play aggressive, this is the result of that.

Good Grief!

Great point. CRB has to take his part of the blame for the loss.

This game reminded me of how they play when they enter the NCAA tournament. They will play beautiful leading up to it but then it's like they forgot how to play, how to play with the same intensity, how to make shots, how to defend, and how to hit the broadside of barn while standing 2 feet from it. And....coaching isn't the whole problem when this is happening.

It’s to the point with a close friend and season ticket holder I can hardly attend a game with him. He instantly blames officiating the entire game as totally distracts me from enjoying the game. I’m actually embarrassed for him and try to educate him but it just seems to be his immediate reaction. Of course there are bad calls…. And CLEARLY there are bad officials but it just gets so old and “common” to blame losses on officiating after every loss IMHO.

Yes, you’re right! They just forget how to play! Brilliant observation.

Most know exactly what you're saying. Some can't for their orange colored glasses.

Love these threads because I figure out who to completely ignore. If you watched that game and thought the refs were the reason we lost, you just aren't very smart. Just a bad game by everyone but Uros. Happens in basketball all the time and no reason to panic. Still a great team capable of beating anyone on any night. I know these boys will respond under The Deacon.
