Believe it or not I have never listened to Kesling call a game. Sirius/XM had the Volnetwork broadcast on this morning. So I listened to the second half. It was not at all what I expected based on all the negative I’ve read about him on this board. His excitement level when the Vols did something good was there and his call of the action was accurate (since I had watched the game I know what had happened before he called it). The areas of improvement I would have enjoyed are two simple items. Tell us what type of play (pitchout, sweep, dive, slant, wheel route, post, out pattern, etc) and where the play is going (is it a run to the left, up the middle or to the right - same with passes). And keep us continually informed of the progress the ballcarrier is making, to build suspense. On the interception by Bama that got overturned by PI, he said it was intercepted at the goal line, then suddenly the runner was at the 50, then suddenly at the 20.
His catch phrases are flat and monotone (eg, “ what a turn of events”, “what a game”, “to the checkerboards”) but overall I was just fine with the call.
