Thank God for Tim Priest and Pat Ryan. At least they are both worthy replacements for Bill Anderson.
I've spent most of my life outside my home state with a good part of that existence more than 8 hours away from Knoxville. I listened to John Ward and Bill Anderson as a teenager in Georgia using a boom box to pick up the signal of a 5,000 watt Atlanta station. And I had it on my computer in 1999 in Tallahassee when the legends signed off after telling us all Tennessee was in possession of the crystal football in Tempe. They were my friends. They were my family. They were a part of home.
They replaced a great friend with someone who just sees it as a job. Thankfully, Tim Priest was there to help us all through the tough times to come while Kesling went through his usual doldrums and getting lost at the down and distance. That man carried those broadcasts and there are few I appreciate more during those dark moments than him.
Kesling was the first sign of the downturn, a symbol of an Athletics Department willing to settle for second best over up and coming talent like Stan Cotten and Mike Keith. These broadcasts are a window to Tennessee football. UTAD should have done more to make sure a seat held by Babe Ruth-level talents like Lindsay Nelson and John Ward wasn't given to a Mario Mendoza-level bum like Kesling.
I have listened to the broadcasts all these years because I want to hear the Tennessee perspective, not because I believe Kesling is one of the best out there.
Saturday night, like all the other games before, demonstrates Kesling is to football broadcasting what Lizzo would be to a strip club.
