Bobby Labonte and Petty part ways

he didn't finish any higher in the points than he ever did at DEI and he only won one race. i'd say it's about even with his best seasons at DEI.

the only difference between last year and this one is he didn't blow as many engines this year.

He was much more competitve during races. He had some bad luck and blew a few races, but he was in the running to win a lot more and was competitive pretty much everywhere. He struggled during the Chase, but his first 20 races or so was championship worthy.

at no point during the season was he running well enough that he was a threat to the Championship.

until he wins one, i won't consider him a threat to win the Championship. i don't care if he loses the Championship on the last lap of the last race.

he's a mediocre driver at best.

If he's going into Homestead with a 140 point lead next year, you'll consider the runner up as the favorite to win it all?

he certainly had a better chance than Dale Jr. did.

until he loses Eury, he will never win a championship.

in no order:

Jeff Gordon
Jimmie Johnson
Carl Edwards
Kyle Busch
Kurt Busch
Matt Kenseth
Greg Biffle
Kevin Harvick
Mark Martin
Jeff Burton
Bobby Labonte
Tony Stewart

there's 12 right there.

therefore, not top 10. like i said, maybe top 15.

I agree, but I was throwing that out there because I don't necessarily agree with the notion that you first have to win a championship to be a threat for one. I'd say Johnson was a threat before he finally broke through, just like I'd consider Busch and Edwards 'threats' this season.

Agree completely. Forget championships, it'll be a major accomplishment if that combination can do more than luck into a fuel mileage win once a season.

I'm biased of course, but I believe Dale Jr. has the talent. He'd won 15 races through his first five seasons with six coming in the '04 season that you mentioned earlier. I don't think it's any kind of coincidence that it's been all he could do to win one race a year, if that, since he's had Eury Jr. on the pit box.

Even though they weren't rolling in the wins in the first half of this season, it should come as no surprise that with Darian Grubb on the pit box holding Eury's hand throughout the race that the performance/results were drastically better than in the second half of the season when Grubb left.

Unfortunately, Dale Jr. has pretty much said he'd rather lose with his cousin than win with anyone else, and as a fan, that's pretty disappointing.
