i don't think the notion that you have to actually win a Cup to be considered a threat to win one holds true for everybody, but i think it applies to Dale Jr. his body of work is large enough now that we should have a pretty good idea of what to expect from him year to year. even when he was running second in the points, i knew there was guys behind him who would finish above him when it was all said and done.

there's probably a double standard in there somewhere, but from what i've see from guys like (for example) Kyle Busch and Carl Edwards is their ability to work with their crew chief, their crew chief's ability to make the right call, and the drivers ability to get the most out of their equipment (talent). i don't think Jr has shown near the ability to do these things like an Edwards or a Busch has. or even Jimmie Johnson did before he eventually won the Cup(s).

04 was easily his best chance to win the Cup. he was also right in the thick of things until he, admittedly, took himself out of it when he came up in front of Carl Edwards. one thing i'm glad of, and just not because i'm a fan of Kurt Busch, is that he lost the championship by more than 25 points that year. i think the call to dock him those points was asinine and i wonder how things might have been if he lost by less than 25. it certainly would have shut the conspiracy theorists up, knowing that NASCAR possibly cost their biggest star a championship. after 04, it became pretty obvious that for whatever reason, he really didn't have what it takes. everything i've seen from him since has been pretty mediocre.

as a fan of the sport, it's dissapointing to know that he'd rather lose with his cousin than win with somebody else. like him or not, it's hard to disagree that him winning is good for the series.
