Pressure mounting on a wobbly Bowden
Posted by John Taylor on October 4, 2009 8:57 AM ET
For the first time since they joined the ACC, Florida State has started league play 0-2.

And, understandably, the calls for Bobby Bowden to make an exit from long-held coaching position are starting to roll in with as much force as they ever have during his time at Florida State.

As if to punctuate the growing sentiment with a giant exclamation point, an article in this morning's Tallahassee Democrat begins with the line "It is time to move beyond the Bobby Bowden Era" and ends with "It is time" for that era to end.

The Orlando Sentinel's Mike Bianchi joined in on the Democrat's call as well.

Florida State made a game of it.

Florida State made it exciting.

Florida State ALMOST came back to beat Boston College.

And this, more than any other reason, is why the iconic Bobby Bowden must step down as Florida State's coach. Because FSU's program should never, ever reach a point where we start saying of the Seminoles, "Yippee, at least they played 'em close."

Needless to say, the heat is on. Bowden knows it, and he attempted to lash out at his growing number of critics.

"Well, you know what? What would I gain by stepping down right now?" Bowden asked following the loss to Boston College yesterday. "Fire the whole coaching staff? I'll evaluate myself; I'll wait until the end of the year."

Heading into the 2009 season, it was a widely held belief that Bowden would coach this year and next, then head off into retirement.

Now? Bowden pacing the sidelines next season is far from a certainty. Regardless of whatever type of evaluation Bowden does.

No they still have the dirty work of getting rid of a Hall of Fame coach. We, hopefully, will bottom out this year or next and are in the rebuilding process.

I would like to see Florida State come back like Miami seems to be moving toward. Florida won't be dominating that state for recruits if Miami and FSU are good.

Bowden should have retired about 7-8 years ago, but hangs only to collect $2-$3 mil per year and try to get the coaching record he doesn't deserve. A bunch of his wins were at Samford, Div. II.

I'm predicting Fulmer at a school like Virginia maybe or NC State. The ACC has a Fulmer feeling to it ... crappy and predictable.

If Jimbo Fisher doesn't get the job next year as promised, he's guaranteed a check from fsu for $5 million!!!! He's probably hoping the old geezer bowden stays another year or two, just to collect that huge bonus!

Mark it down, Phatty will be at Louisville or Virginia next year. One of the two.

One of our beat writers that is from Virginia said last week that phil was on a very short "athletic director's desk drawer list"...He said UVA "covets" phil, dooley, and an NFL guy whose name escapes me..

I thought this was unbelievable and worth noting..

For some reason I see him at Clemson. I know they just hired Dabo, but who cares?

Bobby Bowden's situation is not unlike that of Eddie Robinson at Grambling State.

- Both are pretty much their program's face, and have/had built their program, almost literally from the ground up.

- Both have won multiple national championships.

- Both are facing pressure from various places of power within their university system.

- Both have/had had down years in their final years as head coach.

- Both are, oh how do I say it, advanced in age.

So, this new proposal will give Jimbo the ultimate authority to make changes within the coaching staff, even if Bowden doesn't retire?

What exactly would Bowden's job be at that point?

He doesn't call plays...he doesn't make decisions. He's just a familiar face standing there on the sideline, occasionally picking his nose. I think that makes him the mascot.

I heard the following at lunch today from someone well connected to the FSU program:

1) Prior to either the USF or BC games, two FSU coaches (I won't say who) actually got into a physical fight in the locker room.

2) There is unbelievalbe tension between JF and the coaches he has brought in, and the coaches brought in under Bowden. The coach in waiting thing is an abject failure.

3) Calls now are for Bowden to quit mid-season, not wait for the end of the season, to relieve the pressure between the coaches.

Have no idea if this stuff is true, or exaggerated, or what. But its the rumor.
