Tennessee at LSU rescheduled for Monday

By CHRIS LOW
Staff Writer

KNOXVILLE — Tennessee’s game at LSU, originally scheduled for Saturday night, has been rescheduled for Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

The game will be televised on ESPN2.

The game was originally scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Saturday night, but concerns about Hurricane Rita and its proximity to Baton Rouge, La., prompted UT, LSU, ESPN and Southeastern Conference officials to discuss options.

Earlier today, an angry Tennessee Coach Phillip Fulmer said he wanted the game rescheduled.

“If (the hurricane) turns straight south and goes away, and ends up in South America, we may look at it,” Fulmer said after practice today. “But I don’t see that happening.”

With hotel rooms scarce in Baton Rouge in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, UT had arranged to fly from Knoxville on Saturday morning. With Hurricane Rita’s path still in some question, Fulmer said a Saturday flight was too risky.

“We’ve bent over backwards to do everything that we can to make this happen, including going down the day of the game,” Fulmer said. “Obviously if they’re sending people out of Louisiana, I don’t know why we would be going in, in this situation. Our president will not allow that to happen, and I’m sure the conference office will be on the same page.”

Fulmer said parents of several players have called him and expressed concern about their sons making a trip into such an uncertain situation.

“And rightfully so,” Fulmer said. “I wouldn’t take my kids down there. I wouldn’t put my children in that kind of danger.”

It's probably not the time to do so, but I'm going to anyway.  "WE TOLD YOU SO."  If LSU had just gone ahead with the SEC and together decided to swap the home-home between us this year and next this wouldn't be a problem.  As it is, it is too late

Why? My goodness people, I have never in my life read so many mis-informed posts about a subject.

Baton Rouge is not a war-zone. Baton Rouge can handle a college football game.

Is traffic 2x-3x worse? Yes
Are many hotels full and/or near full? Yes

But traffic is not unpassable and there are hotels all around Baton Rouge and the surrounding area with capacity.

So in essence, LSU was able to have this game before Rita.

Well, in his defense, over the past few weeks, all we've been told is how overrun it was. Of course, they rescheduled one game, didn't play the other home game, and the media still made it seem as though it was pretty rough down there.

We can only go by what we see or read. Having said that...I just want to get this game over with. I'm sick of talking about this crap.

Right. I guess I just got annoyed at the media in Katrina.

Yes, tons of New Orleans and Louisiana was destroyed.

Several blocks from my home, water got up to 8 ft high IN HOUSES.

But in Baton Rouge, this war-zone type thinking that the media has given off is absurd.

Hotels were available, gas is fine, every food place is open and not over-crowded, so forth.....

I mean, don't get me wrong. Traffic is bad....and gas prices are high....but you know what...it wasn't bad enough to cancel or move a game.

It was bad enough to curse, yell, and maybe flick off a person or two

To end this "Hotels" argument, I know for a fact that there were no rooms in Baton Rouge or Lafayette. And now, the situation is even worse. If you search for rooms on Expedia, you will get the following:

"No rooms available on the selected dates: 9/26/2005 - 9/27/2005"

That includes Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and even Jackson, Mississippi. I also personally spoke with a salesperson, who confirmed this assessment.

Well, kiddie...try calling hotels because yes....Hotels do exist.

I know of 5 different families who have booked hotel rooms in and/or right outside Baton Rouge in the last 3 days alone...at 3 different hotels.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn near Baton Rouge the 2nd week after Katrina when it was booked and that was the HEIGHT of people in this city, imo.

Orange, I went to Houston for a few days but came back and am in Jefferson Parish right now.

Mine? Yes

Down the street several houses? None

It really was amazing that my house is where the water started to accumulate (sp?) and 100 feet down the road....water was knee high....100 more ft.....waist high....another 100ft....neck high....

I can't describe driving around my neighborhood with water marks along houses...I would say....7-8ft high....total lower levels of houses destroyed...million dollar houses mind you.

Not trying to argue with you U-T, but I'm trying to get a realistic picture of travel possibilities for those interested.

I took your advice and called 3 hotels in Baton Rouge: no availability and no idea where the nearest hotel rooms could be found. The last actually laughed at my request.

Maybe this is a recent change due to a new wave of evacuees, but I also know that there were none to be found in Lafayette earlier in the week.

Again, not arguing with you, but it's odd that I get this result, and we hear from the media (including our own John Ward) that it's friggin' packed to the gills and traffic is insane -- he relayed a funny story about going into Radio Shack and thinking: "What is everyone doing here?"

It's a non-issue for me, since I can't travel midweek, but for other Vol (or LSU, for that matter) fans, these are real concerns.

Wow. Well, I'm glad to hear you'll be able to go back to it, eventually.

As for the original subject of this thread...man, I just want to get this game over with now. LOL

Well kiddie, right now...you won't find a thing because of Rita. Everyone west of Baton Rouge went to Baton Rouge.

2-3 days ago...there were a good amount of hotel rooms.

I guess that what I was talking about. I am tired of all these posts stating....WHY DIDNT LSU MOVE THE GAME IN THE FIRST PLACE???

I admit, that UT fans will be screwed on Monday fan wise....but I honestly feel that LSU should continue with the game and we, as UT fans, should just take the hit....try and get as many fans as possible....and deal with the situation as it is....

This is an extreme circumstance

I can vouch for UT(the poster) as well, there were hotels availabe before Rita showed up. Evacuees cannot stay in hotels forever, quite a few moved out. Its just sad that it is going to be this way. I am sure if the LSU administration was clairvoyant, things would be different, but hopefully everything will work out for everyone involved.
...That would be UT losing to LSU, and then beating the crap out of Bama for no other reason than to make sure they don't talk crap about a NC for another year.

You don't really think a loss to UT will prevent Bama from claiming it's 48th National Championship, do you?

i thought they were at 84th? So all those losing seasons weren't considered championships? As long as they paid for them, they should claim as many championships as they want.
