Breaking: Ricky Gibson to the portal

While he's probably negotiating and will probably get paid by UT, I'd be willing to bet that part of his agent's negotiation is that he "has an idea that XXX school will pay $$$."

Even if he DOESN'T have an offer already, his agent should imply he has an offer, a reasonable but better offer, and it would be hard for UT to know if it's true or not.

Bluffing is part of negotiating and if his agent doesn't stretch the alleged offer too far, UT will probably meet it.
Do we know or have any way to find out who his agent is? I’m sure that the athletic department does .

I don't know of a way but others might. It wouldn't help other than I suppose seeing how they've handled business for other clients.

To me, it's a matter of a guy, perhaps not even Ricky himself, seeing an opening for negotiation.

The opening to negotiate harder wasn't there when he signed his previous but the injury situation presented a new opportunity.

I find it harsh to blame him because "he already had a deal" when situations changed and new negotiation became possible for him.

We've seen coaches recruit, promise a kid that he'll be developed, then drop that kid when we are able to recruit over them.

It's business.

Maurice Couch would disagree. These kids have a right to sell their talent. Perhaps UT should step up and meet his demands. CB is a position of need. Let’s keep him here. Pay him.
You mean like how they did with Nico, Matthews, McCoy, and Boo Carter? Tennessee is really good at retaining their most talented players.

Legal or not, using your own teammate’s injury to leverage more money is a sh*tty thing to do.

Couldn’t care less if he stays or not.
Say UT had the chance to get somebody like Aaron Scott from Ohio State in the upcoming portal and recruited straight over Gibson, no matter what deal or promises they made, is that a sh|¥¥y thing to do or just the team looking out for their interests?

It goes both ways. Recruiting guys and then recruiting right over them and telling them to hit the portal is normal. Sucks when the shoe is on the other foot.

I HATE what college football has become. But you have to pay him, greedy punk
I use to say don’t boo our players. But if this guy gets what he’s asking for and gets burnt like he did at OSU, then he and others like him should feel the wrath of his fans. Time to boo the crap out of them since they are now paid to perform. Perform or hear the boos rain.

It's interesting that you likely feel these guys aren't playing for the pride of the school but for the money and then think booing will bother them.

Like pros, you can boo all you want but they're already paid and you paid to come and boo them. And you think that would bother them?

No one ever hurt my feelings being upset over my performance EXCEPT the guy who signs the check.

Different than being employed at will. From what I understand, Gibson renegotiated his deal after the season. He made an agreement and now he's reneged on that agreement. So no, I wouldn't do what Gibson did. I would live up to the agreement I made, no matter the financial impact. It's a matter of integrity, being responsible and accountable for your actions. If you would renege on the deal you made, then what does that say about your character?

If the contract was as ironclad as you claim he wouldn't be able to back out right now. Obviously it was not an agreement that would make him legally liable if he were to breach.

If he's free to leave the deal at any time how can you fault him if a better opportunity presents itself? Most people would do the same if they were in his position. You're just speaking from your biased perspective as a Tennessee fan rather than looking at this from the perspective of the player and his family.

Not only would I not do what he did under these circumstances, I wouldn’t hire someone who handled it that way. Doing what the rules allow protects you from a lot of consequences. Being despised isn’t one of them.

Then enjoy losing cause winners take advantage of the rules to get the best results.

If people who play and run college sports think people will stay around forever no matter what they do, take a look at where sports like boxing, tennis, NASCAR, bowling, track and field, cycling, and baseball are today as compared to where they were decades ago.
