Good coach and hire for ND. I really have to question his character though., he just ditches his seniors and other players after they busted thier butts for him the whole season without so much a word. Never mind him publicly saying he wasn't interested in the job then signs with them less then a week later.

This. How can a guy lead a program/team to somewhere they've never been before and right before the game he bails. I can understand assistants, but this is the hc. These guys busted their balls for him and if they go 7-5 this year ND never even looks his way, IMO. This is classless.

I saw where his offensive coordinator Quinn is coaching Cincinnati in their bowl game, but he's coming with him to South Bend, right? He's been with Kelly for 21 years and I'd say his offensive proficiency has had a lot to do with Kelly's success.

I don't think Kelly could have handled the whole thing any better. Due to NSD for recruiting being in early Feb, HC's who get hired away pretty much have to go to the new job immediately to get to work on recruiting. Also, having a lame-duck HC staying through a bowl game would probably do more harm than good. Cincy's interim HC can handle the Sugar Bowl. Remember what WVU with Bill Stewart as interim HC did to Oklahoma?

Part of the departure is avoiding the utter humilitaion in the Superdome.

I think that WVU team was better than this Cincy team, especially defensively. If Florida is ready for this game, they win this game easily.

I respect your opinion Tidal, however what would your take on the matter be if Saban were leaving this week? Honestly?

The same. Honestly.

I respect the points you were making too. It is a shame the players and fans end up feeling betrayed and it's understandable that they do. But wouldn't those same players and fans not take advantage of a great opportunity to advance their own career? Did they feel guilt or pity when Cincy hired Kelly away from Central Michigan? Will they feel guilt or pity if/when Cincy hires his replacement away from another school?

Kinda crappy him leaving and not coaching in the bowl game. Like BMFPV said, perhaps the excuse can now be the distraction and loss of HC for Cincy when they look in the meyer excuse bag.

Kelly or no Kelly, the Gators will roll over Cincy if they don't sleepwalk for 4 quarters.

He told his team the week before the Pittsburgh game that he was going to stay. I don't know what he actually said, obviously, but he made his team believe that he was staying to the point that they were crowing about it publicly, and now a week later he's gone. Dude is a urinal.

Terrible hire.

what makes you say that? the guy has won everywhere that he's gone.

i think the irish may have finally gotten it right with this hire. as far as his character goes i'm still not sure. the way he's gone about this whole situation the last few weeks leading up to yesterday has been questionable to say the least. i do feel like he could have handled the situation better than he did.

regardless though.....several cincy players are still very upset about how this has all unfolded.....and rightfully so.

just to put things in perspective....

Cincinnati takes Brian Kelly's exit well, with a side of bitterness - Dr. Saturday - NCAAF Blog - Yahoo! Sports

Bearcats WR Mardy Gilyard after learning of Kelly's departure at their football banquet:

YouTube - UC's Mardy Gilyard on Brian Kelly's departure

Bearcats TE Ben Guidugli on Kelly:
"We don't really care what he has to say anymore," tight end Ben Guidugli said after a post-banquet team meeting. "He can go talk to his Notre Dame team. We're ready to move forward with whoever wants to move forward with us. He's not on the boat anymore, so we've got to continue on."

i feel bad for all the players. as far as coaching goes, college football is a business. but it's still sucks for the guys who gave everything they got this season only to see their head coach walk out on them before their most important game in school history.

He had little choice but to lead them to think he was staying. He may not have finalized things with ND at that point. Also, he may have been required by ND to keep things under wraps. Besides, if he had told the players before the Pitt game, I doubt they'd have beaten Pitt. Kelly was in a no-win situation with that and would have taken heat either way. Unfortunately, the way the media speculates and things get leaked to the media and the timing of NSD and Bowls in relation to the end of the regular season, it was probably best for all concerned for Kelly to not be open and forthcoming until the regular season was over.

He didn't have to tell the players he was taking the Notre Dame job, nor did he have to lie by telling them he was staying at Cincy. Seems like a spineless douchebag to me.

He stood up in from of his team and he looked them in the eye as men and he lied in their faces. I don't care whether he was in a no-win situation or not; nothing justifies that.

I don't think Kelly is a significant improvement over Weis unless he brings in an excellent defensive staff. What was lacking at Notre Dame was defense. I do not in any way think that Brian Kelly is a better offensive coach than Charlie Weis; and if the defense is not better, it will just be a replay of the Weis era.

Cincy did have an atrocious defense... I'm still not sold on Kelly's recruiting, but ND will be a good place to bring in talent.
