Bru McCoy comments about offense

This is the damning reality mentioned in the article, “But slight hesitations -- all it takes is a half a second of doubt -- are torpedoing Tennessee's chances of hitting big plays in most situations.”

Wrong. Do coaches get some blame? Yes. But much of it is in Milton. He has got to take this team and make it his. He has to be the one who is the unquestioned leader. But let’s face it, these WRs haven’t been good this year. They have dropped many catchable balls. And the OL? Well it’s trash.

Not only drops, but this group of WR's is not getting separation, forcing a lot of contested throws into tight coverage. We're used to seeing guys running free in this offense, but for whatever reason it's not happening with this group.

The OL has been awful, those penalties are drive killers. And Milton looks hesitant and unsure, and his play reflects that. I think Heupel has taken all this into account with the ultra-conservative play calling, but he either needs to roll the dice and open it up, or go to a more deliberate run based ball control offense.

One thing's for sure - you can't go fast if you aren't making 1st downs and getting chunk plays, and right now this offense isn't showing they can do that consistently.

Didn’t we have this exact conversation about Harrison Bailey

I may be incorrect but I think Bray was the last QB, prior to Dobbs, when there wasn’t a QB controversy. We’ve had our share with Cromptob, Worley, Bailey, Shrout, Guarantano, etc.

I can’t list all of them but recall having one of the Simms as qb and Rick Clausen, too. We’ve had our fair share of QB controversies I’ve the past 15 yrs.

Yeah I was just going with the most recent one of the many…

Also, I forgot that Sampson didn’t play a snap. So that’s the third player who usually gets snaps. Slaughter starts and is our best corner. Whatever it is, I can’t control it but it is frustrating.

Perhaps the takeaway is some TN fans enjoy the drama found in a QB controversy.

Milton is a big, really big part of the problem... but we could start Nico tomorrow and there's still plenty of issues. We got whipped on the line and the secondary is pretty much the same. Lots of stupid penalties etc.
I’m not expecting them to be perfect or to solve every problem over night. I just want them to take steps toward being better.

Decision time is coming soon. I can understand Heupel thinking that Joe was the best choice to start the season due to experience. Also, the line lacking its key man makes it dangerous on the frail Nico who might be nursing a wrist injury. Joe could at least absorb some hits. Now that the team has lost and lacking an identity, it’s time to find the right pieces. Get Cooper back and see how much that fixes things. Work Nico in if Joe still struggles.

According to Stoerner Fumbles you need to be paroled too

Sorry for the long post, but….

If I understand this offense correctly, our scheme challenges a defense to adapt with 4 ”in the box.” If they have 6 in the box, there’s someone, maybe more than one, receiver running open. That was common last year. Georgia was the first team I remember to be successful with using 4 in the box because of superior athletes and depth. We lost that game. The success of our running game is what creates the mis-matches. If we can’t effectively run the ball, it negatively impacts our passing game. We did not run the ball effectively against Florida. Maybe it’s Milton, maybe it was Mayes being out again, maybe there’s dissension in the locker room, or maybe it was losing our Offensive Coordinator. Whatever it is, it needs to be corrected quickly.

Lack of confidence in who is managing the game? These guys aren't blind. They see the difference from last year to now and know where the deficiencies lie, but they are trying to be team players. They aren't able to run the same plays from last season, we rarely go vertical and the pre-snap confusion, time/clock management we've seen this season shows the regression in game management. I just hope there's something that gets this thing going in the right direction this coming week.
This! The players can sense their own coaching staff doesn't believe in them with the playcalls that they are making. You are essentially telling your receivers that you don't think they will get open on their own or make a play, so you try and beat them with the screen game. Also, when you are making pre-snap penalty mistakes, its hard to overcome, especially when your defense can't get off the field.

No matter what side you fall on, McCoy's comment is troubling. There's a confidence / trust / chemistry issue with the offense, and that is not good.

Fact is, it's potentially disastrous.

It's time for this coaching staff to prove it's a coaching staff. Otherwise, get used to "Jeremy Banks" games on a regular basis. And now I'm wondering if we didn't just see (another) one. Again, McCoy's comment hints at underlying issues.

7-5. I'll dare them to prove me wrong at this point.

Go Vols.

He is talking about his own mindset but projecting onto the whole team.

Bru hasn’t done anything This year and didn’t do much last year. Not sure why people talk about him like he is all world.

Did any of you guys actually read the article or listen to Bru’s comments? He isn’t taking shots at anybody. He’s just saying they need to play with more confidence.

Personally, I don’t see how you can have a killer instinct or a dog mentality, however you want to phrase it, when 60-70% of the pass calls are screens…. But I do not think Bru is insinuating that in his comments
