A better question would be who was the worst: O'Neil or Houston? Buzz in the mix?
If i recall correctly (and I'm only 25) O'Neil was a fantastic recruiter but one of the worst game day coaches in the history of college basketball.
Green won with that talent.
I guess I'll go with Houston.
have you ever even looked at the records for UT coaches?
I mean Houston was a horrible coach there's no disputing that that but....
Peterson and 4 years and Houston had 5. Houston's 5th year was just horrible but his first 4 years are actually pretty comparable to Peterson's 4 years.
Houston's first 4 years - 60-68 (with his last year obviously being 5-22 bring his overall record to 65-90) but lets just look at the first 4 years since thats all we have of Peterson to compare
Peterson's 4 years - 61-59
Both had 2 winning and 2 losing seasons.
Neither made the toruney but Houston actually had more sucess in the SECT and the NIT and isn't a coach supposed to be measured by what he does in the post season?
Now like I said during the Houston years I was too young to care so there might be more to it than just records and obvioulsy Peterson was a better coach. But my initial statemet was that the Peterson years couldn't have been THAT much worse than the Houston years and by your criteria of records it really wasn't untill that last year under Houston(which coincidentallywas the one year he didn't have his son on the team). So I'm more saying the eras were similiar than I am the saying the coaches were.
So Kevo should have gotten a couple more years? Come on - he was a terrible coach on par with the likes of Houston.
What's worse was the talent he had that he did 0 with.
The discussion at hand is his time at UT, not at his soon to be forgotten time at USC. Although in the long run it'll probably look similar to his stay with the Vols.
It's an absolute joke to pretend that O'Neill was on the same level as Houston. O'Neill recruited amazingly well, and left town before he could utilize the talent he recruited.
When he was brought in to Tennessee, a significant number of players transferred. Thus, he was basically playing with Division II talent.
Left town?
He was ran out of Knoxville by fans and boosters alike. Don't kid yourself.
Terrible game day coach.
