Of course I have. But that doesn't make it any more tedious. And it sure sounds like Bruce spooned it on even more thickly than most of them do. I could have quoted a lot more.

Pearl always spoons everything on thick. You should know that by now.

It's sorta sad that the Final Four is coming up in a couple of days and all of this soap opera coaching news is demanding the attention. What's even sadder is that Tuesday morning there will be nothing happening until the end of August.

But most of his persona is about being forthright and real and honest. Which is why the blithering coachspeak is so jarring and ugly.

I guess the longer we have with Pearl, the more obvious it becomes that a giant chunk of what is so appealing about him is exactly that -- a persona. It shouldn't be disappointing, I guess, but somehow it still is. I shouldn't have been so hornswoggled by the orange blazer.

He'll always be honest about his teams. Or being disappointed in something... but I don't think he'll ever be honest enough (if this is the case -- I don't think it is) to say "Eh, it's ok here but I just stay for the money."

Obviously nobody would ever say that. But do you really have to say "I would never ever look anywhere at Tennessee because I love it so much," etc. etc.? Nobody believes that.

It's not that it's not what your average coach would say -- that's why they call it "coachspeak," after all. It's just that Pearl has spent a considerable amount of time cultivating a different persona than that, and so hearing actual bona fide coachspeak coming out of his mouth is jarring. It eats away at what I really like about having Bruce Pearl as our coach.

Understandable.

Stop the nonsense about the "love" for the university. I don't begrudge people for getting paid, just stop with the nonsense.
Agreed 100% someone is turning into a money grubbing W@%*& I'm losing alot of respect for someone who four years ago was so happy he was coaching at this university now it's all about the "Benjamin$" All I can say CBP with the dimes comes "expectations" better live up to them, I remember someone not to long ago who thought they were untouchable.......

Unless one sees Pearl for what he really is.

I'll admit that a couple of years ago I had bought in fully. But the further in we get, the more it seems like the basic approach is something like "Winning by marketing!" And it sure seems like the main thing being marketed is Bruce Pearl himself.

Why do you think I wasn't put off by his quote? While I like Pearl more than you (and just about as much as most TN fans) I realize he is a coach just like all coaches. Out for himself. Looking for the almighty dollar and an elite coaching job.

The fact that will become obvious to even the densest among us is that the equation is simple. Bruce Pearl=Bobby Petrino.

Depends on how we are discussing Petrino... If we get a new coach in here he won't have to kick half the team off for discipline issues.

I have a question. If, or when he leaves, what makes anyone feel the next hire will be the right one?

Don't be sure.

The vast majority (if not all) of the team could get kicked off for smoking copious amounts of weed. But other than that I don't think his teams have been or will be nearly as bad as Mr. Petrino's at Louisville.

Bruce isn't going to leave UT in the middle of a season to take a high school job... is he?

Well, if you had taken over a program coming off a losing season and ran off seasons of 22, 24, 31 and 21 victories, and suddenly other schools were throwing boatloads of cash at you, wouldn't you take advantage of that fact?

And for the person that said this year's team was undisciplined crap, that may be true, but I'd rather have my undisciplined crap teams (something that happens at every school from time to time) win 21 games and make the tournament, than have them post records like 5-22, 15-16 or 14-17, which we've seen in the last 15 years or so.

Pearl at least has an affable persona. The only two people in the world who think Bobby Petrino is charming are apparently Mrs Petrino and Arthur Blank.

And I believe Mr Blank has been disabused of that notion.

I don't know; apparently Blank was still writing nice letters to M. Vick in prison last year. I kind of get the feeling that he's somebody who can be "disappointed" by other people, but who can never quite pull the trigger and say "I was wrong about you; you're a jackass," and cut them off.

this would be the case at most places.
