Bruce Pearl thinks worst may be over

He's not helping his case by telling Andy Katz he doesn't think the gameday suspension will effect the team that badly. If you're going to claim you've been hidestrapped already and shouldn't be penalized further, it probably isn't wise to minimize the effect of your sanctions.

Yeah.

At this point, he's probably playing to recruits (as in, the ones he's not allowed to go visit for a year). To them the message needs to be, "this isn't that bad, and there's probably no more to come."

Since the NCAA will give notice long before signing day, it's probably spitting in the wind. Still, probably no harm in saying it...maybe it buys you one more week of them taking your phone calls.

Bruce Pearl...Just be quiet. Say "I accept my punishment and we will continue forwards accordingly." How hard is that?

Yeah when I heard Andy Katz reporting on SportsCenter that Bruce told him that the 8 game suspension isn't that bad because it's only on gamedays, I just shook my head. That's a really idiotic thing to say...

Once dumb, always dumb.

Call me crazy, but when you are in the NCAA doghouse, wouldn't it be a bad idea to go around talking about how they aren't going to punish you?

The punishment from the school and the SEC have been more than enough already for violating a stupid rule. And lying to the crooked ass NCAA.

What was he supposed to say? That he was really concerned the 'AA may be more puinitive even after considering Slive's Suspension? He could be right but the words "Bruce Pearl said", don't carry the same weight they used to, and understandably so.

I like CBP, but I thought the exact same thing. He needs to shut it, now!

That's a catch 22 tho. What's he supposed to say? He's not gonna tell his team (or media) that its gonna kill him. Its still the 1st of its kind, like he said.

Pretty much anything else. If you're going to say that the punishment was harsh, which he said it was, why would you contradict yourself a minute later saying it isn't as bad as it appears. It really isn't that bad of a suspension, but keep that to yourself. He's essentially challenging the NCAA to add on to these sanctions...I generally support Bruce, but this is just ridiculously dumb.

I certainly hope Bruce is right, but I do not want to get too excited.

I, like most Tennessee fans, was totally sold on Bruce, and was very proud to have him as our coach. However, it is hard to overlook such a totally stupid act.

Competition is one thing, but the blatant stupidity of making all those extra calls; the entertaining kids at his house when he knew it was wrong; and the lying cannot be condoned. The wrongs probably had no positive effect, and no probability of anything positive, but the negative effect is unbelievable. The fact that it was totally uncalled for is even more devastating.

I hope we can overcome it, but it will be a long time before it can be forgotten. I don't know whether it is more embarrassing to be thought of as crooks, or being so stupid. Neither is a good choice.

We need to have all our coaches spend more time with Pat Summitt. She has proven she knows how to coach, and to coach and recruit with integrity.

The calls were nothing at all. Mostly they were oversights, like one coach calling a kid, not realizing that another coach had already called the same kid. I read the entire self-report, and it was just a lot of nothing.

The visit is worse, since he knew the rule and even told the parents it was a violation. That makes it look bad. Still, though, it's really not a big deal. He would have gotten a wrist-slap at worst, and this wouldn't even be a story by now.

The only real problem is the lying to the NCAA. All the rest isn't worth a second glance.

I think that would be a dumb thing to say. It's not like Pearl has a choice to not accept the suspension.

That's kind of the point. It's a non-statement that sounds like a statement, and it's vaguely humble and forward-looking.

Maybe better statements could be devised, but the general plan of that one is right.
