Kansas State football coach Bill Snyder issued a warning yesterday to anyone who thinks Bryce Brown is the slam-dunk pick to be named starting running back when fall training camp comes to an end.
John Hubert, a 5-foot-7 sophomore from Waco, Texas, could also win the job.
"He's being competitive for the No. 1 spot," Snyder said of Hubert. "It's not as though the depth chart is set and he's out of the picture and comes in to slow it down or speed it up, whatever the case may be. He's being competitive for it."
Brown, a former high school All-American and Tennessee transfer, boasts a 6-foot, 220-pound frame and is expected to ultimately be K-State's top ball-carrier next season. But it is interesting that he is being pushed during spring practices.
Hubert appeared in seven games last season and rushed for 30 yards on 12 carries. He is known as a small, elusive runner, and one of the top high school players (at least statistically) to come out of Texas in 2008. As a senior, he rushed for a whopping 2,853 yards and 41 touchdowns.
He took a redshirt in 2009 and backed up both Daniel Thomas and William Powell in 2010.
The fact that many doubt Hubert's chances against Brown may be part of the reason he is impressing so far. That is one of the reasons Snyder was drawn to Hubert during the recruiting process when others weren't.
"Perhaps people looked at his size," Snyder said. "He's not the biggest guy in the world. That certainly could have had an impact with a lot of people. Maybe the size/speed ratio is not what others wanted.
"I sensed that he was a young guy with something to prove, because he wasn't highly recruited. He was very productive on video tape. Good quickness, good change of direction, elusive, competitive, had the capacity to catch the ball as well as run with it. He can do a lot of things
"... He was a young guy who was maybe feeling him against the world and wanted to prove something. So there was an attitude there, a competitive attitude that, to me, is important."

Glad he is gone, and if he is really in a position battle, and Thats not coach talk, that is SAD.

I hope he does okay, but I differ with you on his talent. He didn't look all that at UT. He was Over Rated in my opinion.

i do agree that he wasn't worth a #1 rivals ranking, but i do think he is a solid back. has great size, quickness, and with a good position coach, he he will do fine. And not to many freshman running backs were going to start over hardesty, but brown showed in his few snaps that he would solid IMO. im not going to lie, i would love to still see him in the backfield at UT but whats done is done. best of luck to him.

Meh. Whatever. Go Kansas. He did too much b*tching and moaning after Kiffin left to make me want to support him anymore. Adios.

If he didn't have so much baggage he could run faster.

I hope for his sake that he has shed all of that and is getting himself together.

Well thats kind of the point. This is something stress free. Other good news: Shaw passed all his tests and is proudly graduating! Also, big Maurice Couch is the newest vol father. UT staff visiting to show support. The Vol family is getting stronger no doubt! VFL

According to Kansas State coach Bill Snyder, Bryce Brown has been pushed for the starting running back job and he is not ready to declare it his just yet. Have fun with that VN.....

...are we actually hoping for his downfall now? ...classy.

No, don't wish him any bad......Just interesting that he wanted out of TN and has competition for the job at KS. Should have stayed the course here. By the way, the other boys name is John Hubert from Waco, Texas. 5'7".

Nah...if he wasn't ready to earn the job, then he did the right thing.

Hopefully, this experience will help him grow up a little. In any event, Synder is probably trying to keep him from getting complacent.
