touching in on the whole Oregon-UT thing, i have to say that you can't reject wheaton's points out of hand. yes, tn has a much better tradition in football and a better history of putting players in the NFL, but most of these recruits are all about the right now. sadly that means our 5-7 season is what a lot of these guys are thinking about with tn (that being said, the excitement of CLK and his staff has gone beyond overcoming that handicap). basically what i'm saying is, yes (IMO) tn is the beeter choice for BB based on tradition, conference, PT, and ability to make it to the pros. however, in the past few years oregon has done a better job of producing NFL backs than the vols. that is a FACT. i know tn has still placed more players into the big league over the last couple of years and we've even had more first rounders, but at BB's position, oregon isn't a bad bet for making it to the pros. now if we want to get into success over recent years and teams on the rise and fall, i would call it a push. tn is about to rise up again and they've won their division 4 times this decade. oregon has not. to me, that screams that, despite tn's woes, they still have a more realistic shot at a national championship than the ducks. that doesn't mean it is out of the realm of possibility that oregon could sneak up on USC and win the PAC-10 and make it to the big game, it just seems unlikely. i will be the first to admit tn has had a couple tumultuos seasons in the past 5 years or so, but they've also shown great resiliancy by winning the toughest division in all of college football (i don't think many would argue that, but i suppose that is not a factual statement). oregon's biggest problem is not their tradition. it is USC. simply put, the PAC-10 is not a very strong conference top to bottom and USC is so far ahead of everyone else it hurts the other teams. so while oregon is comparitavely better than the rest of the PAC-10 (sans USC) right now, there is still a stigma attached to their and the rest of the PAC-10's programs. very very few people actually expect any team not named souther cal to contend for a national title out of the PAC-10. that is why i think oregon is out of the race for BB. he wants to win a championship, and based on both recent history and overall history, i would say tn has the edge. IMO, we've got a superior staff (at least as far as recruiters, and i am loving the discipline), better (bigger) fanbase, more national exposure, fairly equal facilities (oregon may have a slight edge there), better tradition and history, and we present a better opportunity to win championships. i think BB is a vol. i think this weekend is about making papa brown comfortable.
wheaton, i've said it before, i enjoy having you (and most other reasonable fans of opposing teams) come on here and present a different point of view. however, your last few posts were way too long winded and over the top. you refute a lot of what people (fans and recruits) care about football programs based solely on what you deem to be the program with more recent success. i think you do not consider how important it truly is for recruits to go to a school with and a history of winning. like i said, i agree that recent history is what is initially on these kids' minds when they're choosing a school, i just think history and tradition play a big role in the process as well (otherwise bammer would never have been able to overcome how crappy they had gotten). i know ten d's posts were very long and avoided covering a few points RELEVANT to (specifically) BB, but his points were still explanitory for why many recruits would choose tn over oregon. history sells, my friend.
everybody needs to quit being a-holes to wheaton. yea i know he dwells on our 5-7 record as compared to oregon's 10-3 record last year, but it is a VALID point (perhaps not so much as he likes to claim, but it definitely holds water). i think oregon was at one time BB's school of choice, but our coaching staff worked hard and convinced him otherwise. i don't think that says anything bad about oregon. it only speaks well of our staff's ability.
i apologize for rambling on like this. i haven't slept in like 41 hours and i'm running on fumes here.
