I get what you are saying, that's why I said they are voluntary in name only. The coach was not happy about Bryce skipping the workouts and I guarantee there will be a fallout over it come Fall.

By varsity, do you mean D-I, D-II or high school?

They are voluntary as mandated by the NCAA; of course there is pressure to take part in them. Bryce will have to show up and prove that he is the best running back; he should have to prove that regardless of the summer workouts, though.

I understand that there are times when teamwork is important; however, there are also times when individual talent and skill take precedent. We had certain guys at Ranger School and Sniper School both times we went through NTC/JRTC. Ultimately, we knew they would be more valuable with that skill set and that they could catch up with the chemistry that continued to build for the rest of the Platoon/Company through the training centers.

Bryce could be sitting on his a**; he could also be working to become the best possible running back he can be. I think jumping to the immediate conclusion that he is lazy or that he has a poor work ethic because he is not working out with his teammates is unfair and unfounded.

I played high school. Myself and teammates routinely skipped "team workouts" during the summer in order to go to other football camps (either in groups or individually) or to travel with our AAU teams. My high school basketball team was pretty terrible; my football team made (and still makes) the 5A State Semifinals every year in Kansas and is perennially ranked in the Top 5 in the Kansas City Metro Area. Good players play, bad players sit; this held regardless of whether or not some players were more individualistic or more "team players".

Why does relationship matter? Why can't he just be better than everyone else on the team at being a running back? Why does he have to be a "good teammate" and/or a leader?

It seems to me that his job this fall will be to block well, run well, pick the right holes, and run the right routes; be popular and/or a locker room politician is horse sh**.

Once/if he gets to the NFL, he can adopt that attitude. In college, where coaches still have a little power over their players, that kind of thinking will put you on the bench and give you a good chance of missing out on the NFL.
