Yes, I agree. I would also say that I felt great knowing JJJ was capable making the play we needed each time we had an offensive possession. It’s such a “what have you done for me lately” kind of world. The truth is that 90% of posters have a really limited view of college basketball. Experience is such a great teacher.

And there is a lot of context with JJJ...5-star McD AA coming in who did not light it up immediately. Then a couple injuries prior to this season which make it harder for some to evaluate his performances, e.g., last year coming back from the hand/thumb injury. And, now the knee injury...it is sad to see but maybe he can get right coming out of this break.

I guess they think the 3 losses are at Kentucky, at Auburn, and….maybe home to Alabama? Trying to think what the other most likely loss would be after the first 2. I still think 15-3 feels like a lofty goal. Feels more like this team will go a solid 13-5 and grab a 3-seed. I need to see a few more games of offensive consistency before I can say we’re good enough to only lose 3 games in conference play.

I don’t want one of them to be Alabama. I hate Alabama.

I honestly don’t think he will be back, at least in not any capacity to be a meaningful piece to the puzzle.

Pretty much where I have landed. He missed the Kansas and Arizona games. Our two biggest non-conference games. I find it hard to believe he is going to miss practically the entire non-conference slate and then come back ready to go for SEC play. I think he’s done.

The strategy at this point with JJJ seems like giving it 1 last go, they shut him down pretty much and gave it some time off, now he’s back to working almost exclusively with Newman & Mendenwald on the side during practice rather than participate. They are trying to slowly do more and more with him and hoping there’s no issues each day after, that would then lead to eventually some practice etc. and seeing if there’s discomfort. Nobody knows what is going to happen but my guess is you won’t see him in a game any time soon and best case is that they build him back up and you see him in February if he’s gonna be able to give it a go.

Any chance he takes the Maymon route and sits out and gives it another go next year as a RS Senior?

JJJ is a good player and always a benefit to have playing (especially on defense). My feeling is he is always putting up several good to great games in a row before he gets hurt. He always takes several games coming back from injury to get hot again.

5. The offense hasn’t been nearly as bad as the defense has been good, but it also hasn’t been great by any means either and we have to find some balance there even if in theory it means sacrificing a bit on the defensive side. Right now the offense ranks 49th and defense obviously 1st, typically the sweet spot is Top 20 in both offense and defense means you are a really good team. I’m not sure we will get to Top 20 offensively, and honestly if our defense stays what it is then we probably don’t need to be Top 20, but it does need to be better than 49th, that will be something to monitor. It’s much of the same tune we’ve seen in recent years, good defense but an offense that can disappear at times and cost us when it matters most.

6. So what do we need to do offensively to be better? Sounds overly simplistic, but shoot better, last night was a great start but obviously need more than just 1 game. Going into last nights game we were at 40.4%fg which ranks 335th, 46.5%2ptfg which ranks 313th, and 32.3% 3ptfg which ranks 263rd. Last year those percentages were 43.4%, 48.5% and 36%, a saving grace so far this year has been we are one of the very best ORB teams in the country so we are getting extra looks, if we could continue to do that while also shooting better percentages at all 3 spots our offensive efficiency would definitely start to climb. We are also doing a really good job getting to the line, and while we are better than average at the free throw line I think it could still be a bit better, currently 72.6% for 104th overall. 50%fg 40%3ptfg 75%FT is a lofty game by game goal, but something close to that is what we are looking for, and if we do that while continuing to pull down offensive rebounds at a high rate and take care of the ball limiting turnovers then we will be in pretty good shape.

So 4 games later…
-Offense ranks #31 nationally while defense maintains its hold on #1

-44.2% FG ranks 207th

-50.7%2ptFG ranks 201st

-34.6%3ptFG ranks 153rd

-71.7%FT ranks 153rd
