Hard to argue based off these 2 games
Yeah, if his shot isn't falling, he just doesn't do anything else at a high enough level to justify playing time with our deep rotation of guards. His lack of hustle on that play vs. Nova was not a case-builder for more playing time as an on-floor leader, either. If you can't reliably bring a tangible skill (shooting) to the floor, and aren't able to subsidize that with intangible skills like hustle and leadership, you don't really have a place in a rotation as deep and talented as what we currently can deploy.

And Powell, his main competition, showed he can score in other ways besides just 3’s…and Vescovi is playing like an All-SEC guard currently.

Is it just me or does Bailey’s jump shot look “off”?

Seems like he’s rushing his shot more.

It looks like to me that he is leaning and not going straight up on his shot - maybe that is part of the rushing his shot, but stood out to me on a couple of his shots.

With how young our bench is, I think playing 12 players for an entire season would be a huge mistake if 2 of those are freshmen and aren’t getting big minutes. I’d much rather see Maschack and Aidoo redshirt instead of blow one season of their eligibility because we played them a handful of minutes here or there.
Barnes and his staff have way more knowledge than the rest of us. I trust whatever their decisions happen to be. They take everything into account because they interact personally with these guys many hours a week.

Personally, if Barnes is insistent on building depth and having a 10-man rotation, I’d much rather see Maschack and Aidoo get more minutes. We pretty much know what Uros is going to give us (not much) and in limited minutes against Nova Maschack filled the stat sheet even more than Bailey did.

Their ceilings are just far higher than Bailey and Uros. Get them some minutes and experience now, and it might pay off for this season, but it definitely pay off for future seasons.

TL;DR Less Bailey. Less Uros. More Maschack. More Aidoo.

I’ve said Vescovi lacks quickness a few times, but after yesterday I see why Barnes said after preseason practices that he was the most improved. Nine rebounds from a 6’3” guard is amazing, along with his gritty, hard-hat play. Geez, he was a beast against Carolina. I’ve always admired his great attitude, work ethic, and pure hustle. Can anyone name any player the last decade that gives his all more than Santiago?

I think we’ll definitely see more Aidoo as he works his way back into shape. And I agree that Marshak has been making a solid case for more minutes. If JJJ is out for a while, I’d expect him to get more run.

Zeigler was playing the point it seemed most of the time he and Chandler were out there, I would also trim a few minutes off Fulk…

Chandler 20/Zeigler 20
Vescovi 30/Chandler 10
Powell 25/James 10/Bailey 5
ON 20/James 20
Fulk 25/BHH 15
This right here is a rotation that I can get behind

6. This one may get long and be quite a run on, but just a few different thoughts getting compiled together…I just don’t see a way you play Plavsic going forward unless it’s a team with a bruising big man that we are unable to push the tempo against, option 1 against such a player should still be Fulky and trying to push the pace and spread the floor. Going off that, Zeigler showed in this game that he deserves plenty more opportunities, he’s tough as nails, can score inside, be a pest defensively, and looks like he’s finding his 3pt shot. James, even though not a huge sample size, is 1/15 from 3…that’s not gonna stretch the floor from the 3 position, he continues to look better suited for the 4, but that would require Barnes committing to small ball and pretty much removing Uros. To me the strength of this team is the guards, the quickness, and the 3pt shooting. We played a lot of small ball today and had 50+ paint points, only took 20 3pt attempts, had 28 assists on 38 made fg, I say that to say that just cause we are small doesn’t mean the ball can’t go inside. I like…

Chandler/Zeigler
Vescovi/Bailey
Powell
James
Fulk/ORN/BHH

GBO!
The kid seems like a good teammate, but I second the bolded part. Gotta go with a rotation of Fulky, Nkamhoua, BHH, and JJJ in the 4/5 spots IMO.

Dane Bradshaw may have, and Admiral was a battler

Agree on toughness, but neither could shoot like Vescovi. That three guard lineup v. UNC yesterday was bananas! GBO!
It was. One of the many options that Coach Barnes has at his fingertips. This team will have a few bad games, but will have way more good games. It will be a historic year.

You know, it’s quite interesting see how so many on this board have come away with the same conclusions on what our strengths and weaknesses are after this tournament, I only hope Barnes does the same. It was clear he was using this tournament to experiment with some rotations, and IMO it is pretty evident now what we learned.

Plavsic is a liability. Bailey has never seen a shot he doesn’t like, he just doesn’t make many of them. We played our best basketball in BOTH games when we had smaller lineups that spread the floor. A 10-11 man rotation is fine against cupcakes, but it’s clear who the 8 best players on this roster are and your 9th and 10th options (Plav and Bailey) shouldn’t see the floor much.

It will be interesting to see how these next few games go, but the rotation HAS to shrink.
That has been a big concern with me personally, is that he doesn't know when to stop shooting. Even when his shots are "off", he continues to throw them up and it hurts the offensive flow of the game. If he would learn to pass to the hot hand, I would be more apathetic to him getting some minutes. He has shown that when he is "on", he can really score in bunches but more often than not he is taking the Butch Jones approach of "brick by brick".

For anyone questioning Vescovi abilities look around the 11:00 mark of the second half (I think) at a defensive rebound he made. His off season work clearly showed on that rebound. He and two NC kids were going for the rebound and the NC guys literally bounced off him and he retained the ball. Very impressive rebound. He definitely deserved All Tournament!

At this point given what I’ve seen from all of our backcourt, Bailey looks like the odd one out. Hate to see it. Unless he all of a sudden starts shooting lights out in the next couple games his outlook seems bleak.

I think Barnes is going to play up to 3 different lineups and based on who gets “hot” in those lineups, he will allow them to play more minutes. I don’t think he really planned for ZZ and KC to play together that long, but both guys were finding their buckets

I don’t hate that idea, next 2 games are against what should be cupcakes, be a good time to try and force feed Mashack 20 minutes and Aidoo 15-20.

We're gonna need Bailey before the season is out. He is a good piece to have off of our bench. He's a vet, and an aggressive scorer. He definitely has limitations to his game, but there are gonna be some night like last year that he will play a big role in a victory.

Mashack and Aidoo have already played so they won’t be redshirting. QD has seen a few minutes as well. Tamba is the only player still eligible to redshirt.

It makes sense to give everybody at least a few meaningful minutes, even if it is only in every other game. It will keep everybody engaged and there isn’t a clear cutoff after the first 8. It is a real competition for minutes and will make everybody better. It would be disruptive to go 13 deep EVERY game, but using the core 8 every game while rotating a couple from the other 5 each game isn’t a stretch by any means. Mashack, Aidoo, Bailey, Uros, and QD are the 5 that haven’t separated themselves from each other. The 8 of KC, ZZZ, SV, JJJ, JP, BHH, ORN, and Fulk have separated based on talent, experience, or proven results in their appearance.

He has a lot of experience and is the guy that you want at the free throw line in a high pressure, end of game scenario. You don’t want to shut the door on any of the 13 that have played since there is no telling which ones will miss time due to injuries.
